My Sister Went Live With My Setup and Called My Recipe Hers – Part 2

Part 2: She Needed Me to Keep Lying for Her

Jenna stared at Derek Hall’s comment for one beat too long, then tapped the chat monitor tablet with one nail and laughed like the question was easy. “Great question. It’s really just instinct once you’ve made it enough.”

I stayed near the end of the counter with a dish towel in my hands and watched her pick up the saucepan. The glaze was ready because I had reduced it before she went live. Garlic, honey, soy, chili, and the last little bit of rice vinegar added after heat so it stayed bright on camera and didn’t turn muddy. She hadn’t made any of that. She had walked into my finished setup and put her face where my light hit best.

Derek’s comment stayed pinned near the top because people started replying under it.

Yes explain please
Need the crisp tip
Replay always tells the truth lol

Jenna tipped the first batch toward the glaze, then stopped and looked at me without turning her head all the way. “Maya, can you grab the cooling rack? The one I use for this?”

The one I use for this.

I bent, pulled the rack from the lower drawer, and set it beside her. She gave the camera a bright little nod. “Teamwork.”

That word always showed up when she needed something from me in full view.

She laid the chicken on the rack instead of tossing it. That bought her a few seconds. Then she filled them with chatter.

“You guys know me, I’m picky about texture. We don’t rush around here.”

I glanced at the tablet again. People were now asking why she had just said to toss it straight in the glaze if she was suddenly resting it. One viewer wrote, Wait is Maya the one who does the testing? Another wrote, I’ve seen her in the background fixing the heat every stream.

Elena moved between the fridge and counter with a bowl of chopped herbs she had not been asked for. She set it down too hard, looked at the chat monitor, then at Jenna. “Just answer and cook,” she said under her breath.

Jenna lifted the rack a half inch and put it down again. The mic clipped to her shirt caught a small metal rattle. “The rest period is optional,” she told the audience. “Depends how saucy you want it.”

That was not an answer either.

Derek commented again.

Optional meaning how long? We’re looking at creators who can teach repeatable technique live.

That changed the air in the kitchen faster than the burner did. Elena stopped moving. Jenna reached for the bowl of fried basil garnish even though garnish was the last thing that mattered. I could hear the oil snapping behind her because the second batch had been left too long between dredge and fry.

“Maya,” Jenna said, still facing the phone, “can you drop the next batch for me? I want to talk them through the sauce while it cooks.”

There it was. She could not keep the stream convincing and cook the recipe at the same time without using my hands or my timing. I stepped to the stove because letting the pan burn would hurt me too, and because twelve thousand people were watching the same counter where I had done all the work before she hit Live.

I lowered the pieces into the oil one by one so they would not weld together. The sound changed immediately, sharper and steadier.

The chat noticed that too.

Why does it sound different now
Maya dropped those cleaner
Need both sisters on camera

Jenna smiled harder. “See? That’s what I mean about rhythm.”

I looked at the thermometer clipped to the side of the pot and then at her empty hand. She had not even checked it once. My notes sat folded beside the burner with a smear of glaze on the corner.

She reached backward toward me without looking. “Tell me the range on the oil again,” she said, voice lowered just enough that only the mic’s edge barely caught it.

I didn’t answer right away.

She said, louder this time, “For them, Maya. What’s the ideal range?”

Now it was a public question.

I said, plain as I could, “You said you perfected it.”

The chat exploded so fast the tablet stuttered trying to keep up.

OH
Wait what
She said she tested it herself
Answer the temp though

Jenna gave a short laugh and waved one hand. “Guys, don’t make this weird. Of course Maya helps. We’re family.”

Helps. Like I had wandered in with a towel instead of building the whole stream under that ring light.

Derek’s name came back again.

Can the person who developed the live method explain the crisp stage? That’s the part we care about.

No one in the kitchen said anything for a second. Elena’s eyes went from Derek’s comment to my note card to the rack of chicken cooling exactly where I had put it. Jenna picked up the glazed spoon, set it down, then reached for my handwritten notes like she needed them to be in her hand before she could speak.

I put my palm on the paper first.

And that was when she asked me, in front of everyone watching, to tell her the one step she had just claimed was instinct.
