Part 3: The Number on the Record

If the chip matched Brianna’s story, the moment would die right there. Marlon could see that much from the way Brianna planted her feet and lifted her chin toward the phones, like she was daring the crowd to watch her be proven right.

Naomi held her phone with both hands, screen angled toward Dr. Elena Park instead of toward the cameras. That choice mattered. It kept the scene from looking like a stunt and made Brianna’s bigger gestures look even looser by comparison.

Dr. Park stepped to the end of the folding table, close enough to see but not close enough to turn herself into part of the ceremony. “Read me the number,” she said.

Naomi read it cleanly, one section at a time.

Dr. Park repeated each set back, then pulled out her own phone. Her clinic windbreaker shifted open enough for Marlon to see a badge clipped to her shirt. Around them, the fundraiser kept half-moving. A dog inside the park barked at a skateboard passing the fence. A volunteer at the donation jar froze with a handful of singles. Nobody at the gate left.

Brianna gave a brittle laugh into the space while Dr. Park looked down at the screen. “This is unreal,” she said. “We’re doing veterinary admin in the middle of a charity ribbon-cutting now?”

Renee did not hand the mic back.

Dr. Park asked Naomi, “Can you show me the screen you pulled it from?”

Naomi stepped forward one pace. Toby went with her before the leash tightened. Marlon caught that too. Not as proof by itself, but as another detail the crowd was collecting.

Dr. Park compared Naomi’s display to her own. She did not rush. The delay did more to strip the air out of Brianna’s performance than a speech would have. Brianna started talking over the silence.

“He stayed with me after the breakup,” she said, turning slightly so the streamer could catch her better side. “Everybody here knows I’ve brought him to events. Everybody’s seen him with me.”

“That isn’t what I asked,” Dr. Park said without looking up.

The front row shifted. Somebody near the sponsor sign said, “Oh boy,” under his breath.

Dr. Park tapped once, then looked at Toby’s collar, then at Naomi. “May I see the tag area and scan point?”

Naomi nodded. Brianna did not.

Instead Brianna tightened her hand on the leash and said, louder now, “You’re not putting your hands on my dog in public because my ex decided to act out.”

Marlon heard the sharpness before the crowd did, because he had heard its smaller version behind the sponsor sign earlier. Now it came through the same mouth that had been selling second chances five minutes ago.

Renee’s face changed first. Not softer. Harder. She shifted the microphone to one hand and said, “Brianna, if the record clears this up, let it clear this up.”

Brianna looked at Renee, then at the raised phones, then back at Dr. Park. “This is harassment.”

Naomi’s answer stayed level. “Then let the chip say so.”

Dr. Park finally lifted her gaze from the phone. Her voice carried without the mic. “The registration attached to this chip number lists Toby under Naomi Pierce.” She paused long enough for the name to land. “The emergency contact and clinic history on the record also match Naomi Pierce.”

The crowd did not explode yet. First came the tiny sounds. A swallowed curse. A sharp inhale. The rustle of people adjusting their stance so they could see Brianna’s face.

Brianna started speaking before anyone else could. “That record could be outdated. That doesn’t mean anything by itself. People forget to update pet files all the time.”

Dr. Park kept her tone flat. “The file shows recent contact activity.” She turned the phone slightly, enough for Renee to see the screen. “Recent enough that this is not an old abandoned registration.”

Naomi did not reach for the leash. She just stood there with her hand near Toby’s collar while he leaned into her leg again.

Marlon saw Brianna’s public script trying to stay upright and failing at the joints. Warm host voice. Sharp side comments. Possessive grip. Camera smile that kept dropping out between words.

Then Renee asked the question that pushed the whole thing forward.

“If the registration is Naomi’s,” she said, “why was I told Toby was Brianna’s rescue story for today’s program?”

No one answered for half a beat.

Marlon did.

He did not step into the middle, but he spoke from the table clearly enough that the nearest phones swung toward him. “Because behind the sponsor sign, Brianna said to keep Naomi by the gate until she finished the live, and not to let the vet woman get pulled into anything before she was done.”

The silence after that was cleaner than the first one.

Brianna whipped toward him. “That is not what I said.”

Dr. Park held up Naomi’s phone, then her own. “The record is clear.”

Renee looked at the leash still wrapped around Brianna’s wrist, then at the ribbon waiting by the cones, then back at the crowd that had stopped pretending this was still a tidy fundraiser moment.

“Brianna,” she said into the mic at last, voice crisp enough to reach the back, “give Naomi the leash and step away from the ribbon. Right now.”

Brianna did not move.
