Part 4: The Decryption Cutoff
Leo did not reach for the key, but his shoulders remained tense, his posture blocking the path to the main corridor. “Chloe, if you load the master override from the plaza console, it rewrites the device’s security certificates. It will completely break my build. I won’t be able to access the developer workspace on this unit ever again.”
Chloe looked from Leo to the diagnostic screen, where the developer credentials “L_DEV_99” continued to flash. “Then you’ll have to use a standard retail unit for your tests.”
“The retail units don’t have the same access permissions,” Leo said, his voice low and tight. “It means starting the calibration process from scratch. It will take weeks.”
Maya did not intervene, keeping her hands resting on the edge of the counter, watching the blinking status light of the USB-C key.
Chloe picked up the master key. She did not raise her voice, but her movements were deliberate. She inserted the key into the primary port of the AuraLink glasses. The diagnostic console immediately displayed a system warning: *Firmware Modification Detected. All active developer tokens will be revoked. Confirm?*
Leo stepped back, his hands dropping to his sides. “Chloe, think about this. It’s a family contract. We planned our budget around the completion bonus.”
Chloe looked at the screen, then at the physical keyboard. She did not look at Leo. She pressed the enter key to confirm the command.
The console screen flashed black, then displayed a progress bar. *Revoking developer certificate L_DEV_99… Done.*
A second prompt appeared on the screen: *Enter new master security password to encrypt local spatial data.*
Chloe typed a sequence of characters quickly, her eyes fixed on the keys. She pressed enter again.
The green wireframe projection on the ceiling vanished. The blinking connection light on the diagnostic console turned solid red, then gray. The destination IP address for Leo’s private developer server disappeared from the active stream log, replaced by a generic error message: *Connection Refused: Invalid Access Token.*
Leo stared at the screen. The diagnostic window updated to show the new local encryption status: *User Encrypted. Developer Bypass Disabled.*
“It’s done,” Chloe said. She unplugged the AuraLink glasses, folding the temples back before placing them inside her shoulder bag. She pulled the zipper closed with a smooth, decisive pull.
Leo looked at the closed bag, then at Maya. Maya remained seated behind the counter, her hands still resting flat on the laminate surface. No one spoke.
Leo turned and walked toward the exit, his movements stiff. The automatic glass doors slid open with a soft hiss as he passed through, leaving the diagnostic alcove quiet except for the distant, repetitive sounds of the arcade games.
Chloe adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder. She nodded once to Maya.
“Thanks for the diagnostic run,” Chloe said, her voice steady.
“Anytime,” Maya replied.
Chloe turned and walked toward the parking lot, her posture straight, her steps unhurried, leaving the plaza behind.
