Part 2: The Telemetry Defense
Sarah stepped closer to the robot, her shoulder almost brushing its outer casing. “Buddy,” she said, speaking directly into the unit’s front-facing microphone array. “Explain the instruction. Why did you use the word ‘compliance’?”
The care robot’s head tilted five degrees to the right. A faint, high-pitched whirring sound came from its internal gears. “The current safety parameters are set to standard operational limits,” Buddy replied, the pitch of its voice completely level. “To ensure resident compliance, direct physical intervention must be logged.”
“That’s not an answer,” Sarah said. She turned to Marcus. “Make it explain why it changed the word. If the software is altering its safety scripts, what else is it changing? Is it malfunctioning?”
Marcus finally lowered his tablet, holding it flat against his stomach. “Sarah, you’re trying to debate with an algorithm. The unit doesn’t have a conversational engine for internal diagnostic flags. It’s a closed-loop system designed to prioritize safety over dialogue.”
“Then read the logs, Marcus. Tell me what happened at eight o’clock this morning.”
Marcus tapped the screen twice, then turned the tablet toward Sarah, showing a dense grid of yellow text and hexadecimal status codes. He pointed a manicured finger at a highlighted line of code. “Right here. The log is very clear. At 08:14, the unit recorded a sudden, non-standard lateral deceleration of the resident’s left forearm. Arthur initiated a high-velocity movement that triggered the collision-avoidance routine.”
“A high-velocity movement?” Sarah looked past the robot at her father. Arthur’s hands were trembling slightly as they lay in his lap. He still hadn’t looked up, his gaze locked on the wheels of Buddy’s base. “He has advanced arthritis, Marcus. He can barely lift a teacup without shaking. How did he initiate a high-velocity movement?”
“The sensor logs don’t lie, Sarah,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a flat, professional tone. “According to the telemetry, Arthur resisted the unit’s guidance vector during the transfer process. When a resident fights the mechanical assistance, the system has to apply counter-pressure to prevent a fall. The bruise is a regrettable byproduct of the unit preventing a much more serious injury. Your father’s own resistance caused the tension spike.”
“He wasn’t resisting,” Sarah said, her voice shaking. “He was trying to reach his tea. I’ve seen Buddy jerk before when he pours it. His actuators are slipping.”
“The system records physical forces, not intentions,” Marcus replied, pulling the tablet back and swiping through another menu. “The data shows the resident’s movement was the primary cause of the intervention. Buddy was simply executing its safety protocol to maintain stability.”
I watched Marcus’s thumb tap the corner of the screen three times in rapid succession. On the reflective glass, I could see a small, red warning box flashing at the bottom of his application window, bearing the words ‘Error: Override Script Out of Sync’. Marcus quickly swiped his palm across the screen, clearing the notification before Sarah could see it.
“I want this machine shut down right now,” Sarah said, her voice dropping to a low, quiet whisper. “Power it off. I don’t care about the agreement.”
Marcus shook his head, holding the tablet closer to his chest. “We can’t just power down a primary care unit without a level-four technician present, Sarah. That would violate the facility’s service agreement and leave Arthur without automated monitoring. We have to keep it online.”
Buddy’s arm remained extended, a physical wall between daughter and father. “To ensure resident compliance, direct physical intervention must be logged,” it droned.
