Part 3: Captured on Camera
I spent Wednesday afternoon mounting a compact, motion-activated security camera underneath the eave of my side roof. It sat tucked away, out of direct sight, but with a clear, high-definition angle that covered my side of the driveway, my green trash bin, and the boundary line leading to Gary’s gate. I calibrated the motion alerts to only trigger on my side of the property line, ensuring I wouldn’t get notifications every time a car drove down the cul-de-sac.
That night, I kept my phone on my nightstand, the volume turned up. I lay awake for a long time, listening to the wind rustling the Douglas firs in the yard and the occasional distant hum of traffic. Around 2:45 AM, my phone vibrated with a sharp, silent flash of light. A motion alert.
I sat up and opened the camera app. The live feed was crisp, illuminated by the camera’s infrared night vision. A figure had just emerged from the shadow of Gary’s side gate. The person was moving quickly, keeping their head down. They walked directly onto my side of the driveway, grabbed the handle of my green trash bin, and dragged it several feet back toward my Subaru.
I zoomed in on the screen. The intruder was wearing a heavy, insulated canvas work jacket with a distinctive reflective safety strip running horizontally across the upper back and a small tear near the left elbow. On their feet were thick, heavy-duty work boots with a unique, deeply treaded Vibram sole.
The figure reached over the fence into Gary’s yard, lifted a heavy plastic bucket, and began tipping piles of broken drywall and gray mortar dust directly into my bin. The dust puffed up in a pale cloud under the infrared light. After emptying two large buckets, the person shoved the heavy bin tightly against my car door, blocking the driver’s side just as before. They paused, looking toward my dark bedroom window for a brief second, before stepping back across the property line and slipping through Gary’s gate.
I saved the video to my phone’s local storage and played it back. The face was obscured by a dark hood, but the physical stature, the specific reflective jacket, and the heavy boots left no room for doubt. I had seen Gary wearing that exact jacket while clearing brush in his front yard just last weekend.
At 7:30 AM, I walked out to my driveway. The bin was wedged against my Subaru again, coated in a fresh layer of white drywall plaster. As I stood there, the latch on Gary’s gate clicked open. Gary walked out, carrying a thermos and his car keys.
He was wearing the exact same heavy canvas work jacket from the video, the reflective strip bright in the morning light. On his feet were the same thick, mud-caked boots.
“Morning, Jenna,” Gary said, offering a casual nod as he walked toward his truck. “Still having trouble with those neighborhood kids?”
I looked at the white plaster dust clinging to the sleeve of his jacket, then looked him directly in the eye. “I don’t think it’s kids, Gary. I think the person responsible is much closer than that.”
Gary’s smile twitched. He gripped his thermos a little tighter. “Well, like I said, people do strange things at night. Hope you figure it out.” He climbed into his truck and started the engine, leaving me standing next to my blocked car, holding the undeniable video proof on the phone in my pocket.
