Part 3: The Hidden Log
Sarah stepped closer to the dispatch counter, her boots squeaking on the wet quarry tiles. Leo took a half-step back, his elbow knocking against a tower of cardboard delivery boxes. ‘Slide the status bar down, Leo,’ Sarah said, keeping her voice even and low. ‘If this is a standard operational update, the network diagnostic tool will display a green verification badge. If it is an external redirect, the screen will show an active port override.’ Victor adjusted his cuffs, his gaze fixed on Sarah. ‘Leo does not answer to the operational staff, Sarah. We are in the middle of a proprietary server synchronization. Any physical interruption of the hardware now could corrupt our entire transaction log for the quarter.’ ‘The transaction log is already frozen,’ Sarah said, pointing to the blank ticket printer. ‘Marcus, check the secondary line monitor.’ Marcus tapped the display screen mounted near the grill. A red error banner flashed across the top: ‘Gateway Access Redirected.’ He did not speak, but he pointed a thick finger at the error code. Sarah turned back to Leo. ‘You called it a diversion sync. The app doesn’t have a diversion sync protocol. The only time the word diversion is used is during manual routing overrides.’ Leo looked at Victor, his forehead glistening under the heat lamp. His thumb hovered over his phone screen, where a long block of text remained active. ‘Let me see the status tab, Leo,’ Sarah said, stepping into his line of sight. Leo shifted his grip on the tablet. As he pulled the device closer to his chest, his thumb swiped across the top-right corner of the glass screen. The swipe triggered the terminal’s developer log, cascading a series of status lines down the display. At the very top of the log, a line of text blinked in bright orange: ‘RULE_DIVERT_REVENUE_TO_VICTOR_HOLDING_LLC’. Sarah stopped, her eyes tracking the blinking text. ‘There is your diversion, Leo. You read the wrong line off your phone script. You were supposed to say validation sync, but you read the redirect rule instead.’ Leo did not reply. He stared at the screen, his shoulders dropping slightly as the glowing letters reflected off his face. Victor stepped closer, his neat shoes stopping just short of the grease line on the floor. ‘The holding account is an administrative treasury structure. It is designed to manage cash flow fluctuations at the corporate level. It is completely within my purview as the primary investor.’ ‘Our contract states that all delivery platform revenues must route directly to the operating account to cover daily inventory and staff wages,’ Sarah said. She pointed to the screen where the diverted rule continued to execute. ‘This isn’t treasury management. This is a manual bypass that leaves our kitchen account empty by midnight.’
