Part 3: The Registry
Mr. Vance held the tablet, its screen casting a red glow onto Evelyn’s face. “The system requires the primary registration key,” he repeated, his tone level. “It is registered under an adoption record ID. Chloe, you should have this if you are the primary developer.”
Chloe looked down at her polished fingernails, her lips pressed into a thin line. She did not answer. Evelyn stepped closer to Maya, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper that Clara could still hear from the kitchen door. “Maya, give us the number. You don’t need the grant. Chloe’s career depends on this.”
Maya did not move her arm. Clara observed the silver band on Maya’s wrist-the metal worn thin, the engraved numbers faint under the yellow patio lights.
“I am not entering it,” Maya said, her voice barely carrying over the background hum of the party’s jazz music.
Evelyn reached out, her fingers catching the edge of the silver bracelet. She pulled Maya’s wrist upward, trying to turn the band to read the engraved sequence. Maya pulled her arm back sharply, stepping behind the wooden support pillar.
“Evelyn,” Clara said, stepping forward from the sliding glass door. “Everyone is looking.”
Evelyn ignored Clara, her eyes fixed on Maya. “You have no right to ruin this night for your cousin. We took you in. We supported you. That bracelet is the only thing you brought with you, and it belongs to this family’s history now.”
“The registry key is tied to my legal adoption record,” Maya said, her voice remaining low and steady. “It is my personal identifier. If Chloe enters it, she is committing fraud on a federal database.”
Mr. Vance stepped into the space between the pillar and the laptop table. He looked from Evelyn’s tense posture to Maya’s guarded stance, then down at the screen of the presentation laptop. The warning message on the laptop had changed, a timer now flashing in the upper right corner: 2:00 remaining before account lock.
“The system has detected multiple failed access attempts from Chloe’s device,” Mr. Vance said, tapping the tablet. “If the verified registration key is not entered within two minutes, the portfolio will be locked, and the system will automatically file a dispute report with the university’s academic integrity board.”
Chloe gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She looked at Evelyn, her shoulders shaking slightly. “Mom, we need to stop this. They’ll rescind my degree.”
Evelyn did not back down. She grabbed a pen from the table and stepped toward Maya again, her notepad ready. “Write it down, Maya. Now. Or I will make sure your father cuts off your rent support tomorrow morning.”
Clara watched Maya’s reaction. Maya did not blink, nor did she reach for the pen. Instead, she adjusted the silver band, ensuring the engraved side faced inward against her skin. Across the yard, Maya’s father was laughing with a group of neighbors near the barbecue pit, holding a paper plate of food, entirely unaware of the confrontation.
Mr. Vance checked his watch. “One minute, Chloe. If you cannot provide the developer registry number, I will have to retract the grant recommendation immediately. The system is automated; once the dispute flag is raised, the university administration is notified within the hour.”
Chloe’s face had lost its color. She reached out and grabbed Evelyn’s arm, her fingers digging into the sleeve of her mother’s silk blouse. “Mom, tell him. Tell him there’s a mistake.”
“There is no mistake,” Evelyn said, though her voice wavered. She looked around the yard, realizing that several other guests had stopped talking and were now watching the group. She turned back to Maya, her eyes wide. “Maya, please. Just type it in. We can sort out the details later.”
Maya walked past Evelyn toward the presentation laptop. Clara followed her movements, observing the way Maya’s hand hovered over the keyboard.
“I will enter the key,” Maya said.
Evelyn let out a quick, sharp breath. “Thank you. Chloe, get ready to take over the presentation once the screen clears.”
But Maya did not hand the keyboard to Chloe. Instead, she looked up at Mr. Vance. “I will enter the key to unlock the database,” Maya repeated, her voice clear and distinct, “but the system will verify the primary owner.”
She pressed her thumb against the engraved numbers on the baby bracelet, memorizing the sequence she had known since childhood, and began typing.
