Part 4: Boundaries and Consequences
The intake area goes quiet, save for the hum of the old fluorescent lights and the distant chime of the precinct’s front door. Marcus sits back down, his shoulders slumping. He looks at the scratches on the metal counter, refusing to meet my eye or Officer Vance’s gaze. The power he thought he held has evaporated, leaving him small and exposed.
Officer Vance turns to me. “We can call a detective down here right now, Clara. If you want to file a formal complaint for felony extortion and coercion, we will take him into custody and execute a search warrant for his devices to seize that backup drive.”
I look at Marcus, then down at my phone. A formal criminal trial would mean months of relitigating our relationship, court dates, public records, and the constant, agonizing fear of where those photos might end up if his devices are handled by third parties. I don’t want a public spectacle, and I don’t want his money. I want safety. I want an absolute, unbreakable wall between Marcus and my life.
“I don’t want a trial,” I say, looking Officer Vance in the eye. “I want a documented precinct safety order. I want it recorded today that he is legally barred from contacting me, and that if any of my private files are ever uploaded, shared, or sent to anyone, it will trigger an immediate arrest.”
Officer Vance nods slowly. “We can issue a formal precinct stay-away warning and digital safety restriction. It goes into our system immediately. If he violates it by contacting you or if any restricted material is distributed, it bypasses the civil courts and goes straight to a criminal warrant.”
“I’ll sign it,” Marcus whispers, his voice barely audible. He doesn’t look up from the desk.
Officer Vance pulls up the precinct template on his monitor, typing in the details of the digital safety restriction and the stay-away order. The printer behind him whines as it spits out two copies of the document. Vance slides the first copy to Marcus, tapping a pen on the signature line.
“Sign here, Mr. Vance,” the officer says. “This document officially notes that you have been warned. You will delete the backup drive immediately. If Clara’s files appear anywhere on the internet, or if you make any contact with her, we won’t need a complaint. We will come arrest you.”
With a trembling hand, Marcus signs the warning. The confident facade is completely gone. I sign my copy, acknowledging the terms. Officer Vance stamps both documents with the precinct seal, filing one in the drawer behind him and sliding the other over to me.
I fold the stamped paper and slide it into my purse. Looking at Marcus one last time, I see only a defeated man staring at his own useless printouts. I stand up, turn my back on him, and walk out of the precinct into the cool evening air. The tension that has held my chest tight for months finally dissolves, replaced by the quiet, earned relief of a boundary locked in place.
