My Cousin Tried to Turn His “Favor” Into a Debt I Had to Pay – Part 2

Part 2: The Story Kept Changing Every Time I Pushed Back

By the next morning, the same family group chat had turned into a running argument without anyone admitting it was an argument. Derek kept circling back to the same point: he had helped me, the app request was reasonable, and I was being difficult by treating a simple favor like a courtroom exhibit. Aunt Carla kept posting small lines about gratitude and peace. Grandma Jo only wrote twice, but both times the thread slowed down around her words.

I was still looking at the screenshots when Derek sent another message that changed the shape of the whole thing.

Derek: I am not asking for much. I stepped in and saved you a headache.

That was new. Yesterday he had said he covered something I could not handle. Before that, he had said he bailed me out. Now it was a headache. He kept shifting the wording, but the payment request stayed the same. I scrolled back through the thread and compared every version side by side. The story did not stay put long enough to support itself.

Nina texted again.

Nina: He keeps changing the favor into whatever sounds best. That’s not clarity. That’s pressure.

I sent her the newer screenshots and looked again at the older ones. The chain was there in plain view if I stopped reading it like a family argument and started reading it like a sequence. Derek had posted the first praise, then the request, then the follow-up messages that made his help sound bigger every time somebody questioned it. The family replies had done the rest. Aunt Carla’s “be thankful” sat right under his message like a stamp. Grandma Jo’s question had made everybody slow down, but nobody had asked the one thing that mattered: what exactly had I agreed to pay back?

I asked it in the chat.

Maya: What did I ask you to cover?

Derek answered fast, too fast.

Derek: You know what I mean. Don’t play dumb in front of everybody.

That was the first time he stopped sounding helpful.

I stared at that line and then at the earlier message Nina had pointed out. Derek had said the favor saved me from a problem, but the timestamps showed he was also the one who benefited when it happened. He got the ride, the access, the quick fix, the thing that helped him keep moving. It wasn’t a clean rescue. It was a trade he was trying to rename after the fact. That didn’t make him less loud in the chat. It made the whole debt claim feel more like a performance he expected the thread to keep repeating until I gave in.

Aunt Carla made it worse by trying to flatten it into manners.

Aunt Carla: If you got help, just settle it and move on.

I answered her as plainly as I could.

Maya: I’m not settling a debt I never agreed to.

Then Derek sent the kind of message that only works if the room lets it work.

Derek: Everybody saw I came through for her. Everybody knows I did her a favor.

I looked at Grandma Jo’s last reply. It was short, just three words.

Grandma Jo: Which favor?

Nobody answered that one right away. Derek didn’t. Aunt Carla didn’t. The thread sat there with the request still open, the screenshots still saved, and the whole family watching the same gap I was watching: if his version was so solid, why did he keep revising it every time I asked for one clean sentence?
