Part 2: The Digital Jury
The heavy metal flashlight came down in a brutal, sweeping arc. Through the phone’s tiny speakers, the sound of the reinforced glass shattering was a deafening, discordant crash that caused Chloe to physically recoil. She dropped the device onto the marble island, pulling her hands into her chest as if the jagged shards were flying into her own kitchen.
On the glowing screen, the livestream descended into total chaos. The camera shook wildly as the mob surged forward, their overlapping cheers distorted into a hellish, static-filled roar. A massive hole had been punched right through the front window of Kosta’s Bakery, and the camera operator was currently using a heavy boot to kick the remaining spears of glass out of the frame.
“No, no, no,” Chloe chanted, her voice sounding small and pathetic in the massive, unfurnished room. She snatched the phone back up, her thumbs slipping against the smooth screen in her blind panic.
She had to stop it. She had to cut the head off the snake. She closed the livestream app and frantically opened her own profile. The offending video-the highly edited, tearful rant about the dismissive cashier who had supposedly ruined her day-was now sitting at an astronomical seven million views. The engagement metrics were rising so fast the numbers were blurring. For a fraction of a second, the ingrained instincts of a career influencer flared up; this was the best performing piece of content she had posted in over a year. It meant lucrative brand deals, renewed relevance, absolute algorithm dominance.
Then she heard another crash of glass from the livestream still playing in the background. She tapped the three dots in the corner of her video. The menu popped up. She hit *Delete*. A prompt asked her to confirm. She slammed her thumb against *Yes*.
The video vanished. Her feed shifted, bumping her previous post-a harmless, sponsored makeup tutorial-to the top slot.
Chloe let out a shaky breath, leaning her heavy weight against the cold marble counter. Without the source material, the fire would die out. The comments would lock, the aggressive shares would break, and the momentum would stall. It was a fundamental rule of digital physics. She swiped back over to the livestream, praying to see the mob disbanding, confused by the sudden disappearance of their rallying cry.
Instead, the camera was now fully inside the bakery. The fluorescent lights overhead buzzed, illuminating a scene of absolute devastation. The mob had spilled over the front counter. A teenager in a puffy jacket was casually knocking rows of delicate, hand-decorated pastries onto the floor, while another used a metal stool to smash the glass of the refrigerated display case.
Then, the streamer’s voice broke through the noise, breathless and dripping with toxic righteousness. “Wait, guys, hold up. Check your feeds.”
Chloe’s heart slammed against her ribs.
“She deleted it,” the streamer shouted, his voice echoing through the ruined storefront. “The video is gone! This piece of trash must have mass-reported her! He’s trying to silence our girl!”
A collective groan of outrage echoed from the crowd inside the shop. The deletion hadn’t doused the fire; it had poured gasoline on it. In the twisted, paranoid logic of the internet, a deleted video wasn’t a retraction-it was undeniable proof of a conspiracy. It was a gag order. It meant their queen was under attack and needed them more than ever.
“Where is he?!” someone screamed in the background.
The camera whipped around, the lens violently refocusing on the swinging doors of the back kitchen. A shadow moved behind the frosted glass. The streamer sprinted forward, shoving past a tipped-over rack of cooling bread that scattered loaves across the linoleum.
“We got him!” the streamer yelled.
The camera pushed through the doors into the cramped, brightly lit prep area. Backed into the stainless-steel sinks was an older man. He wore a flour-dusted apron over a simple blue button-down shirt. His thinning gray hair was disheveled, and his face was entirely devoid of color. He held a heavy wooden rolling pin in front of him, but his hands were shaking so violently that it rattled against the metal basin. This was the monster Chloe had painted for her millions of followers. An exhausted, terrified baker who clearly possessed no understanding of the parasocial army currently dismantling his livelihood.
“Get the camera on him!” a girl shrieked from just behind the streamer. “Make him apologize!”
“What do you want?” the old man shouted, his voice cracking with heavy terror. His thick accent was barely audible over the mob. “I call police! Get out of my store!”
“You don’t call the police on us, you abusive creep!” the streamer snarled, stepping so close to the baker that the camera lens was mere inches from the man’s terrified eyes. “You think you can disrespect Chloe and just get away with it? You think you can silence her?”
Chloe’s vision tunneled. She felt physically sick, a cold sweat breaking out across her neck. She backed away from the kitchen island, unable to tear her eyes away from the screen. The old man looked like he was about to have a heart attack. He dropped the rolling pin; it clattered loudly on the tile floor as he raised his trembling hands in a desperate plea for mercy.
“Who is Chloe?” the baker begged, tears gleaming under the harsh fluorescent lights. “Please. I don’t know this Chloe.”
“Liar!” the streamer screamed.
A new notification suddenly dropped down from the absolute top of Chloe’s screen. It wasn’t a comment. It wasn’t a text message. It was an in-app system alert that made the blood freeze in her veins.

The livestream feed split neatly in half. The top showed the terrified baker, cornered by a mob of teenagers wearing her custom merchandise. The bottom half showed a pulsing, empty black box with her smiling profile picture in the center, waiting for her front-facing camera to activate. The green *Accept* button flashed rhythmically at the bottom of her screen.
“Chloe, we know you’re watching!” the streamer announced to the 250,000 people currently tuned in. “We’ve got him. He’s right here. Come on the live and tell us what you want us to do with him.”
