Part 3: The Deafening Truth

The flashing green *Accept* button pulsed at the bottom of the screen, perfectly synchronized with the frantic hammering of Chloe’s heart. Above it, the view from Kosta’s Bakery was a nightmare of shattered glass, trampled pastries, and aggressive bodies. The older man was pinned against the commercial sinks, his flour-dusted hands raised to protect his face. The viewer count in the top right corner ticked over 260,000. Over a quarter of a million people were watching a live feed of a terrified man being hunted in his own kitchen.

“Come on, Chloe!” the streamer yelled, his voice echoing through the tinny speaker. “We’re waiting on you!”

If she declined, they would think she was still being silenced. They would tear the bakery apart down to the studs. She had to shut it down. She had to tell them to go home. Her thumb hovered over the glass. Muscle memory, forged by years of digital performance, forced her to straighten her posture and smooth her hair before she pressed the green button.

The screen split instantly. On the bottom half, Chloe’s pale face appeared, framed by the cold, empty expanse of her unfurnished marble kitchen.

The chat feed, streaming up the left side of the screen, accelerated into a blinding white blur of text. Thousands of crown and fire emojis stacked on top of each other, moving so fast that individual usernames were impossible to read.

“She’s here!” the streamer screamed. “The Queen has arrived!”

A deafening cheer erupted from the mob inside the bakery. The camera violently shook as the streamer shoved the lens directly into the baker’s face, turning the phone so the terrified man could see the split-screen. “Look at her! Look who we brought to judge you, old man!”

Chloe’s throat clamped shut. Kosta stared into the camera, his eyes wide and bloodshot, tears cutting clean tracks through the white flour dusting his wrinkled cheeks. He looked so frail, so utterly broken by the sudden invasion of his life.

“Guys, stop,” Chloe choked out, her voice trembling. “Please, just step back from him. Leave him alone.”

But the audio delay, combined with her carefully cultivated internet persona of sarcastic, detached superiority, betrayed her. To her followers, she didn’t sound panicked; she sounded like she was playing with her food.

“You hear that?” a girl laughed in the background of the bakery. “The Queen says give him some air before we finish him!”

“No!” Chloe yelled, leaning closer to her phone, her fingers gripping the marble counter. “I mean stop everything! Get out of his store right now! I didn’t mean for this to happen!”

The streamer scoffed, keeping the camera locked on the baker. “Don’t cover for him, Chloe. We saw the video before they made you delete it. He threw you out! He humiliated you! Now he’s going to apologize to you in front of three hundred thousand people.” The streamer slammed his free hand against the stainless steel prep table. “Say you’re sorry! Tell her you’re a piece of trash!”

Kosta flinched violently at the sharp metallic bang. He squinted at the glowing rectangle in the streamer’s hand, his chest heaving. For a long, agonizing second, the old man just stared at Chloe’s image. Then, the pure terror in his eyes shifted, replaced by a sudden, desperate spark of recognition.

“You,” Kosta gasped. His thick, heavy Greek accent distorted the word, making it sound entirely different from the cartoonish villain voice Chloe had mocked in her video. “The girl with no wheat.”

Chloe froze. *No wheat.*

Yesterday afternoon, she had stood at the front counter of his shop, scrolling through her phone, and mumbled a question about whether they carried any gluten-free croissants.

Kosta shook his head frantically, his flour-covered hands reaching up toward his own face. He tapped violently at his right ear. For the first time, in the harsh, unforgiving glare of the streamer’s camera light, Chloe saw the bulky, beige plastic of a medical hearing aid tucked tightly behind the old man’s earlobe.

“I no hear!” Kosta pleaded, his voice booming loudly in the cramped kitchen. It was the exact same booming, abrasive volume she had complained about in her video. “I no hear on this side! The ovens, the mixers, they so loud! I cannot hear what you ask me!”

The cold marble of the kitchen island seemed to drop out from beneath Chloe’s hands. The memory of the interaction violently restructured itself in her mind. He hadn’t rolled his eyes at her; he had leaned over the counter, turning his head sideways, desperately straining his good ear to catch her muffled voice over the roar of the industrial dough mixers.

“You ask for no wheat,” Kosta continued, his voice cracking with panic as he gestured wildly toward the front of the ruined bakery. “I point at the door! The sign! We put new menu by the door!”

Chloe stopped breathing. She remembered him pointing a thick, calloused finger aggressively toward the exit, his loud voice booming over the counter, telling her to look by the door. She had taken it as a dismissal, a furious demand for her to get out of his shop. She had run to her car, turned on her ring light, and filmed a tearful video about being aggressively chased out of a local business.

“Gluten-free by the door!” Kosta cried, his hands trembling in the air. “I try to show you! I try to help you!”

The relentless waterfall of text in the chat feed abruptly slowed. The endless stream of crowns and fire emojis fractured, replaced by a sudden influx of question marks. The mob’s blind momentum was hitting a wall of profound confusion.

Inside the bakery, the overwhelming noise of the crowd died down to an uneasy, shuffling murmur. The streamer lowered his flashlight slightly, his brow furrowing as he looked from the sobbing, deaf old man to the phone screen.

“Wait,” the streamer said, the toxic righteousness completely evaporating from his voice, leaving only a hollow, confused static. He turned the camera back to the split screen, forcing Chloe to face the massive audience. “Wait, Chloe… what is he talking about?”

Chloe stared into the lens of her phone, the crushing weight of a quarter-million sets of eyes bearing down on her silence.
