Part 2: The Convenience Fee
*TAMPER PROTOCOL INITIATED*, the notification read, its aggressive red banner bleeding into the edges of the cracked glass. *Multiple failed biometric entries logged. Smart-lock hardware physically disabled for twelve (12) hours to protect tenant assets. To contest this lockdown, contact your Property Manager.*
Mateo stared at the screen until his vision blurred. “Protect tenant assets,” he whispered. His teeth chattered so violently he bit his own tongue, the metallic taste of blood mixing with the rainwater running down his face.
He hammered the heel of his hand against the steel-reinforced door. It felt like punching a bank vault. His palm throbbed, a dull and distant pain beneath the overwhelming, suffocating cold. The wind howled off Puget Sound, driving the rain sideways across the open-air concrete walkway of the third floor.
His phone battery ticked down to seven percent.
He needed to get out of the wind. Dragging his insulated food delivery bag, Mateo staggered down the breezeway toward the communal laundry room. The small cinderblock room housed two ancient industrial boilers; it was always eighty degrees inside. He reached the door, grasping for the familiar brass handle, but his hand found only a sleek metal plate.
Chloe had upgraded the laundry room, too. A secondary Aura scanner protruded from the door frame, its idle blue ring glowing softly in the dark.
Mateo pulled up his resident app and tapped his phone against the scanner.
The ring flashed a harsh, punitive red. *ACCESS SUSPENDED. OUTSTANDING LEDGER BALANCE.*
He leaned his forehead against the freezing metal door, his chest heaving with shallow, jagged breaths. He couldn’t even stand next to a dryer to survive the night.
He turned to Unit 304, the apartment right next to the laundry room. Elias lived there, an older man who drove a swing-shift taxi. A light was glowing through the blinds. Mateo pounded on the door. “Elias! It’s Mateo! Please, I’m locked out.”
Footsteps approached. The peephole darkened. A moment later, the door cracked open two inches, stopped by a heavy chain. Elias’s face appeared in the gap, his eyes darting to Mateo’s soaked clothes and violently shivering frame.
“Mateo? Jesus, you’re blue. What happened?”
“Aura locked me out,” Mateo gasped, his voice tight and thin. “Can I just… can I stand in your kitchen? Just for a few hours. Until I can figure it out.”
Elias reached for the chain, but abruptly froze. His eyes drifted upward, settling on the glowing Aura camera integrated into his own door frame. The older man swallowed hard. “Mateo… they pushed a new lease addendum to the portal yesterday. Did you read it?”
“No,” Mateo shivered, gripping his own arms. “Elias, please. I’m freezing.”
“The cameras use facial recognition to log guests. The addendum says if I harbor an unauthorized or delinquent tenant, Aura automatically drafts a two-hundred-and-fifty-dollar liability fine from my ledger. If it bounces, they lock me out too.” Elias’s voice cracked. “I don’t have it, Mateo. I’m on a fixed income. I can’t risk the fine.”
“They wouldn’t actually-”
“The software does it automatically,” Elias interrupted, tears welling in his eyes. “I’m so sorry.” He shoved a folded, faded quilt through the gap in the door and slammed it shut. The smart-lock engaged with a heavy, mechanized thud.
Mateo wrapped the quilt around his shoulders. Within seconds, the freezing rain soaked right through the worn cotton, turning it into a heavy, icy weight dragging him down.
He slumped against the concrete wall, sliding down until he hit the wet floor. His phone chimed. Battery at five percent.
It was a mass email from Chloe, forwarded through the Aura system to all residents. *Hey everyone! Just a reminder that I’m currently out of the country on a much-needed yoga retreat in Tulum! 🌴 If you have maintenance emergencies, do NOT text me. The Aura system handles everything now. Remember, emergency dispatches incur a $150 convenience fee. Stay warm out there!*
Mateo stared at the palm tree emoji. He couldn’t feel his toes anymore. The deep ache in his bones was giving way to a dangerous, lethargic numbness. If he stayed on this walkway, he was going to die.
He opened the Aura app. The red padlock dominated the screen. Below it, a new button had appeared: *Override Tamper Protocol & Dispatch Emergency Technician – $150.00.*
Total needed: The $65 balance, plus the $150 override fee. $215.
His checking account held fourteen dollars.
With trembling, unresponsive fingers, Mateo minimized Aura and opened GigCash, a predatory payday advance app popular among delivery drivers. The interface flashed a bright, friendly green. He requested a $300 advance against his future gig earnings.
*Processing… Approved! Note: A 25% expedited transfer fee has been deducted.*
Two hundred and twenty-five dollars dropped into his checking account. He was now mortgaging weeks of future labor, locking himself into a debt spiral he couldn’t afford, just to buy his way through a door he already owned the right to walk through.
Battery at three percent.
He switched back to Aura. The rain on his screen made the touch sensors erratic. He wiped the glass on his bare forearm, holding his breath as he navigated the payment portal. He selected his linked bank account and hit *Pay Total Balance ($215.00).*
The app loaded. The spinning geometric logo seemed to stutter.
*Payment Confirmed. Ledger Balance: $0.00.*
The heavy padlock icon on the screen melted from blood red to a friendly, welcoming green. *Tamper Protocol Overridden.*
A massive wave of relief washed over him. It was over. He was broke, he was deeply in debt, but he was going to be warm. Mateo dragged himself up the wall, pulling his soaked body to its feet. He walked back to his door, raising his thumb to the scanner.
The scanner remained dead black.
He frowned, pressing his thumb harder against the glass. Nothing. He reached for the handle. Still locked tight.
His phone vibrated. Battery at one percent. An automated push notification from Aura flashed across the dimming screen.
*Ledger cleared. Emergency override accepted. A work order has been generated for a physical technician to replace your disabled smart-lock hardware. Estimated technician arrival: 48 to 72 hours. Please seek alternative accommodations until your hardware is replaced. Thank you for choosing Aura.*
Mateo read the words twice, his mind completely refusing to process the horror of the gray text. He had paid them everything. He had borrowed money he didn’t have to pay a ransom to a machine, and the machine had simply taken the money and told him to wait three days.
A text message slid down from the top of the screen. It was Chloe.
*Saw your payment cleared the ledger! See? The automated system is so easy once you get used to it. Have a good night!*
Mateo opened his mouth to scream, to dictate a message, to call her, to do anything, but the screen abruptly froze. The battery icon flashed a hollow red silhouette, and the phone died, fading to black, mirroring the dead sensor on the door that stood between him and survival.
