When Marcus walked into Boardroom A at four o’clock, the atmosphere was thick with hostility. David looked impatient, tapping his phone on the mahogany table. Marcus tapped a key, and the projector flared to life. The massive screen at the end of the boardroom filled with the stark, undeniable lines of the raw server telemetry.
“Tyler,” Marcus said, looking directly at his subordinate. “You were the last one in the environment. Walk us through the failure.”
Tyler shifted in his chair, glancing at Evelyn as if seeking protection. “Like I said in my report, the environment was unstable. I was trying to run a standard compilation, and the memory leaked. How does a failing server spontaneously run a targeted extraction query on a logistics plan right before a crash?”
Tyler swallowed hard. The smugness had completely vanished from his eyes. “It… it was an automated fallback response. The system was trying to cache the logistics plan to save it.”
“The math doesn’t support that,” Marcus replied, clicking to the next slide, revealing the network egress logs. “A cache process stays internal. This log shows an outbound data stream. Marcus locked eyes with Tyler, letting the silence stretch for a half-second before dropping the anvil. “Four point two gigabytes is the exact mathematical byte-size of the Apex logistics plan. Then, at 11:42:18, the automated backup was disabled manually using your SSH key. Explain the math, Tyler. Walk me through the mathematical probability of a crashing server perfectly packaging, compressing, and transmitting a stolen logistics plan to an external IP address, all while authenticated under your credentials.”
David Chen stopped tapping his phone. He sat up straight, his eyes locked onto the network logs, recognizing instantly what he was looking at. Beside him, Evelyn’s pen hovered motionlessly over her notepad.
“I was load testing!” Tyler’s voice cracked, pitching an octave higher than normal. Sweat began to bead at his hairline. “I was running a load test locally! I had to download it because you wouldn’t give me the staging environment bandwidth! You’re twisting this!”

“This is an ambush!” Tyler shouted, looking frantically at Evelyn. “Evelyn, do you see this? He’s targeting me! He’s creating a hostile environment! I don’t feel psychologically safe!”
“I don’t care how you feel,” Marcus said softly, the quiet volume of his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. “I care about the raw data. Explain the data.”
The cold, inescapable weight of the objective logs crushed the last of Tyler’s composure. The practiced victimhood shattered entirely.
Tyler slammed both hands onto the mahogany table, pushing himself up so violently his ergonomic chair tipped backward and crashed onto the floor. “Because you’re a goddamn machine!” he screamed, his face flushing a mottled, furious red, spit flying from his lips. “You sit there with your spreadsheets and your logs and you expect perfection! Yes, I took the plan! I was going to run the algorithm locally and fix it because your rigid timelines are impossible! But the script hung! It hung, and I panicked! Is that what you want to hear? Are you happy now, you arrogant, micromanaging piece of shit?!”
Tyler stood chest-heaving, glaring with unvarnished hatred across the table, completely unaware that David had already pulled out his phone to call security, and Evelyn was staring up at him in horrified, absolute silence.
