Part 2: The Clawback Clause

The violent rattling stopped, replaced by a frantic, open-handed slapping against the wood. “Please! I know you’re in there!” a voice cried out, muffled and breaking. It was a young woman’s voice, high-pitched and strained with panic.

Chloe crept across the kitchen linoleum, her pulse hammering wildly against her ribs. She held her breath and pressed her eye to the scratched glass of the peephole. Distorted by the fisheye lens, the figure standing on her welcome mat wasn’t an angry manager seeking revenge, nor was it a process server. It was the teenage girl from the video.

Without her flour-dusted apron, she looked even younger. She wore an oversized grey hoodie, her face blotchy red and streaming with tears. She raised a pale fist to strike the door again.

Chloe unlocked the deadbolt but kept the heavy brass chain engaged. She cracked the door open an inch, keeping her foot wedged firmly against the baseboard.

“How did you find me?” Chloe asked, her voice trembling.

“You posted from the parking lot with your location tagged,” the girl gasped, shoving a crumpled piece of paper toward the gap. It was a printed screenshot of Chloe’s profile. “You have to take the video down. Please. Right now. You have to tell them you were wrong.”

Chloe frowned, her initial fear morphing into defensive confusion. “Did he send you here? You don’t have to protect him. I saw how he was treating you.”

“He didn’t send me! He’s at the police station!” the girl cried, wiping her nose with her sleeve. “His name is David. He’s my foster dad. He gave me that job so my social worker wouldn’t transfer me to a group home. And now people are threatening to burn his house down!”

Chloe’s grip on the edge of the door tightened. “I saw him screaming at you.”

“You didn’t hear a word he said because the industrial coffee grinder was running!” The girl leaned closer to the crack in the door, her eyes wide with absolute desperation. “I messed up, okay? I was rushing. I used the peanut-butter spatula to move a batch of sugar cookies. A little boy took one bite and went into anaphylactic shock right there by the register.”

The blood drained from Chloe’s face. A cold, sinking dread settled deep in her stomach.

“David wasn’t berating me,” the girl sobbed. “He had just jammed an EpiPen into a dying four-year-old’s leg. Paramedics took the kid out the back alley door to avoid a panic. By the time you started recording, David was having a total meltdown. He was pointing at the allergen charts on the wall behind me. He was screaming at me to look at what I’d done, because I almost killed a child!”

Chloe’s mind raced, replaying the silent, zoomed-in footage that was currently sitting at four million views. The red face. The frantic pointing. The terrified look on the girl’s face. She hadn’t been cowering from an abuser; she had been in shock from nearly committing manslaughter.

“Someone threw a cinderblock through the front window this morning,” the girl continued, her voice dropping to a raw whisper. “David lied to the health inspector an hour ago. He said *he* cross-contaminated the cookies so I wouldn’t violate my probation. He’s losing his business to protect me, and your video is destroying his life. Please. You have to delete it and tell the truth.”

Chloe couldn’t speak. She stepped back, letting the heavy door gently click shut. She stared blindly at the wood, her lungs feeling too tight to draw a full breath. She had been so sure. It had been the perfect narrative of justice.

Panic seizing her chest, Chloe rushed back to her couch and snatched up her laptop. She didn’t open her social media app to delete the video. Instead, she frantically clicked into her email inbox and opened the signed PDF of the wellness brand’s sponsorship agreement.

She hit CTRL+F and typed the word *cancellation*.

The screen jumped to Section 4. The legal jargon was dense, but the bolded text was unmistakable. *Creator must maintain the sponsored content, and the initiating viral post, on the primary platform for a minimum of thirty (30) days. Any deletion, archiving, or public contradiction of the sponsored material within this window constitutes a material breach, resulting in an immediate ACH clawback of the full compensation amount.*

Chloe dropped the laptop onto the cushions. An immediate ACH clawback.

She snatched up her phone and opened her banking app. The massive sponsor payment was gone from her available balance, replaced by a pending outgoing transfer to Oak Creek Care Facility. If the sponsor yanked their funds back, her checking account would plunge thousands of dollars into the negative. The facility’s payment would instantly bounce.

A banner notification slid down from the top of her phone screen. It was a text from the nursing home administrator.

*Oak Creek Admin: Payment portal processed your transfer! I’ve officially removed your mother from tomorrow’s discharge roster. She’s safe here. Have a wonderful weekend, Chloe.*

Outside in the hallway, the girl knocked again, the sound weak and hollow against the thick wood. “Please,” she whimpered through the door. “He has toddlers at home. They’re terrified.”

Chloe stared at the green text message on her screen. She thought of her fragile mother, whose belongings were no longer being packed into cardboard boxes. Then she looked toward the door, where an innocent man’s life was being dismantled brick by brick because of her rush to judgment.

If she deleted the video and posted a retraction, she would save David. But the sponsor would trigger the clawback, the check would bounce, and her mother would be out on the street by Monday morning.

The metal deadbolt remained firmly in place. Chloe sat completely paralyzed in the silence of her apartment, listening to the soft, devastating sound of the girl crying on the other side of the door.
