Part 1: The Compost Bin Had a Name I Could Not Repeat
Megan was already talking over me before I got the garage light all the way on, one hand on the compost bin and the other slicing the air like I had interrupted a lecture instead of a lid that would not stay shut. We were in the middle of the suburban garage, with a half-open recycling tote, a stack of potting trays, and that bin sitting right between us like it had earned a title I did not trust. She kept calling it a closed-loop system, like the words alone could make the cracked rim stop gaping.
I had the bin tilted toward me because the latch would not catch. The top lip was warped, the side seam had a split, and every time I lifted it, a dark wet line showed near the bottom. Linda stood by the workbench with her arms folded, saying nothing, just looking from my hands to Megan’s face and back to the bin. Megan kept her voice even and fast. That was her trick. She could make plain garbage sound like a certified process if she kept enough jargon in the room.
“Dad, you are looking at it like it is trash,” she said. “It is not trash. It is an aerobic capture vessel. The whole point is controlled exchange.”
I held the bin out a little farther and pointed at the seam. “Then why is it dripping?”
She did not look at the seam. She looked at me like I had asked whether the sky was stored in a bottle. “Because you are not accounting for condensate migration. That is normal. It means the material is active.”
Linda’s eyes stayed on the floor under the bin. A drop hit the concrete and made a dark spot the size of a dime. I shifted the bin and saw two more spots already there. It was not a lot, but it was enough to stain the garage floor and enough to make me notice the smell of sour vegetable scraps under the cleaner smell of dish soap from the bucket nearby.
I asked her, plain as I could, “What is condensate migration?”
Megan smiled without showing teeth. She had on the green hoodie with the white recycled-fiber tag still hanging inside the collar, and she looked ready for an argument she had already won in her head. “It is the movement of moisture through the carbon layer. If you understood the chemistry, you would know the bin breathes.”
The way she said it made Linda glance at me, then away again. Nobody laughed. Nobody needed to. The garage had gone quiet except for the hum of the old freezer in the corner and the soft rattle from the bin as I set it down on the rubber mat.
I crouched and looked under it. The bottom was wet along one edge. I tapped the side. The plastic gave a dull, hollow knock. No airflow. No breathing. Just a cheap bin with a bad seal.
“Megan,” I said, keeping my hand on the lid, “I am asking because this thing is leaking onto the floor. I want to know if that is supposed to happen.”
“It is part of the matrix,” she said immediately. “If you let the system stabilize, you would see the thermic exchange normalize.”
