“Step away from the scanner, Marcus,” Clara said. Her voice was flat, empty of its previous defensive edge.

Marcus slowly withdrew his hand from the counter, stepping back toward the shadow of the cryo-storage unit. I picked up Vial V-709 and slid it into the spectrometer port of the Sequencing Machine Model S-4. The machine’s internal laser clicked, casting a thin red line across the base of the sealed glass tube.

On the terminal screen, the analysis software initialized. A progress bar crawled from left to right, analyzing the light refraction index of the liquid inside the vial. When the bar hit 100%, the molecular signature graph appeared. It was a completely flat line.

“The refractive index is 1.333,” I said, reading the raw analysis data from the screen. “The absorption spectrum shows no nucleic acid peaks at 260 nanometers. There are no lipid nanoparticles, no genetic material, and no therapeutic vectors in this vial.”

Clara looked at the flat line on the screen. “What is in the vial, Julian?”

“It is standard saline solution,” I said. “0.9% sodium chloride.”

I laid the physical evidence out on the office counter: the courier shipping manifest for the late-delivered enzymes, the Wednesday morning system override log, and the printout of the flat-line spectrometer scan.

“The timeline is reconstructed,” I said. “Marcus did not have the raw synthesis enzymes on Tuesday because they were still in the courier’s warehouse. To meet the family board’s deadline and secure the investment capital, he simulated the therapeutic sequence data on his personal computer. Early Wednesday morning, he bypassed the database ledger, backdated the digital record to Tuesday, and uploaded the simulated file. When the enzymes finally arrived on Thursday afternoon, he didn’t use them. He simply filled Vial V-709 with saline, applied a label printed that day, and sealed it to present as physical verification.”

Marcus stood with his back to the freezer, his eyes fixed on the concrete floor. He did not offer an explanation. The hum of the garage lab’s cooling fans was the only sound left in the room.

Clara walked past him to the computer terminal. She did not look at her nephew. She navigated to the user security panel, selected the MV-ADMIN profile, and clicked the deactivation key. The screen flashed once, displaying a red notification: ‘Account Access Revoked.’ She then reached into the desk drawer, pulled out the physical security keycard for the lab’s electronic lock, and placed it on the counter.

“Your credentials are locked, Marcus,” Clara said. “The family board will receive a non-compliant audit report. The research funding is terminated. You have until tomorrow morning to remove your personal tools from this garage under Julian’s supervision.”

Marcus picked up his car keys from the desk, walked to the side door of the garage, and let the screen door click shut behind him.

I printed the final audit log, stamped it as non-compliant due to sequence fabrication, and handed the clipboard to Clara. She signed her name at the bottom of the page, marking the official end of the project. I packed my digital scanner and the delivery manifests back into my briefcase. The pressure that had filled the suburban lab for the last three days was gone, replaced by the quiet, clean reality of the ledger.
