The next morning, the atmosphere in the Horizon Genetics Suite was thick. Marcus Miller stood at the head of the conference table, his large signet ring tapping rhythmically against a metal clipboard. He did not look at the lab readouts on the screen; he looked directly at Elena Vance.
“We have another ruined control batch, Elena,” Marcus said, his voice booming through the small room. “The board is looking at our weekly output, and the discrepancies are unacceptable. As the lead geneticist, the responsibility for these training failures falls on you.”
Elena sat with a cold mug of coffee in front of her. Her face was pale, her lips pressed into a thin line. “The baseline samples were contaminated after I completed the calibration,” she said, her voice dry and clipped. “I personally verified the seals.”
“And yet, they failed,” Marcus replied, tapping the ring again. “Julian tells me he asked for your assistance with the mixture, but you were too busy with your own sequencing.”
Across the table, Julian shrugged his shoulders, his face a mask of mild, harmless confusion. He looked down, pulling out his phone under the edge of the table to scroll through something, completely detached from the reprimand. He did not offer a defense, nor did he look at Elena.
I sat next to Elena, my hands clasped tightly in my lap. I looked at Julian’s face, then at Marcus. “The system log for CRISPR Sequencer Unit 4 showed a successful run late last night,” I said, my voice steady. “The run was logged under Julian’s credentials.”
Marcus frowned, finally looking down at the clipboard. “Julian was cleared to leave at five. The system must have auto-saved a daytime queue.”
“It wasn’t a queue,” I said. “The run started at 11:42 PM and finished at 2:00 AM. It generated Lab Report #882-G.”
Elena turned her head to look at me, her brow furrowing. Julian’s hand stopped moving over his phone screen. He did not look up, but his shoulders went rigid.
After the meeting, I stood up and walked to the terminal in Sequencing Room B, pulling up the raw data log on my monitor. The screen cast a pale light over the keys as I scrolled down to the timestamped entries. Lab Report #882-G was sitting in the queue, marked with a yellow warning flag, awaiting a final digital signature to be uploaded to the federal database. The signature required for this report would lock the data permanently into the federal database, making it impossible to retract without triggering an automatic audit. I compared the daytime typing errors associated with Julian’s account-littered with backspaces, basic syntax mistakes, and aborted runs-with the late-night data.
The late-night run was flawless. There were zero backspaces. The sequence code was entered in a single, uninterrupted stream of characters, demonstrating a speed and accuracy that matched, or perhaps exceeded, Elena’s own.
But when I opened the report’s metadata to check the safety parameters, I saw the true contradiction. The late-night sequence was indeed perfect, but the baseline control values had been manually adjusted to flag Elena’s previous successful studies as contaminated. The clean, rapid typing had locked in a set of false parameters under Elena’s supervisor ID, framing her for a major safety violation.
