Part 3: The True Balance
I held the tablet just out of Chloe’s reach, my thumb tapping the billing history tab before she could grab it. I didn’t just find sponsorships; I found the financial reality she had been hiding behind her filtered, high-energy stream persona. A bright red banner flashed at the top of the screen: Overdue Balance: $8,400. Final Notice Before Repossession.
“Give me the tablet, Maya!” Chloe demanded, her voice rising an octave. She lunged slightly, but I stepped back behind the heavy wooden prep table.
“You didn’t buy this five-figure setup because you were doing well, Chloe,” I said, pointing at the screen. “You bought all of this on credit, and you’ve missed the last three payments. The leasing company was going to repossess your cameras and this very ring light next week.”
She stopped, her chest rising and falling rapidly. Her cheeks flushed a deep, blotchy red under her ring-light-ready makeup. “That’s just temporary cash flow. Every creator goes through it. The new sponsorship covers it.”
“The sponsorship you got by stealing my lavender-lemon tart recipe,” I countered. “I’m looking at the payout details. The brand paid you fifteen thousand dollars. The deposit hit your account three days ago, and it was immediately auto-drafted to pay off your equipment defaults. You didn’t buy me a birthday gift. You used my work to save your own skin, and now you’re trying to extract another five thousand dollars from me to pay off the rest of your debt.”
Chloe crossed her arms, her chin trembling slightly but her eyes flashing with defensive anger. “It doesn’t matter how the bills got paid, Maya. The equipment is in the bakery. It benefits the family business. If you don’t help me clear the rest of the leasing debt, the channel goes under, and the bakery loses its main marketing source. Mom and Dad will agree that you need to support the partnership.”
“Partnership?” I scrolled down to the account settings page. “Then why is the creator account registered as a sole proprietorship under your name only? You told Mom and Dad this was a joint venture to get them to let you use the kitchen and utilities for free. But every single dollar from the sponsorships goes directly into your private personal checking account. The bakery doesn’t see a dime.”
Chloe stared at me, her mouth opening slightly, but no words came out. The polished influencer persona had completely cracked, leaving only a panicked debtor standing in my kitchen.
“I’m not paying a cent of your debt,” I said, setting the tablet down on the stainless-steel table between us.
“You have to,” Chloe whispered, her voice dropping the defensive heat and turning desperate. “The sponsor contract requires three more baking videos this month. The organic flour brand wants the ‘secret series’ to continue. I already scheduled a live baking stream for tomorrow morning. If I don’t go live with the next recipe, they’ll cancel the contract, and they’ll sue me for the advance. You have to help me, Maya. You have to bake tomorrow.”
She looked at me, pleading with her eyes, trying to shift the weight of her impending collapse onto my shoulders. I looked from her desperate face to the humming ring light, and I knew exactly what I had to do.
