Part 2: The Stolen Signature

I tapped on the top-performing video on the tablet. The thumbnail featured a close-up of my hands crimping the crust of my signature lavender-lemon tarts, a recipe I had spent three years perfecting. The title of the video read: My Secret Signature Pastry – Baking from the Heart.

I clicked play. Chloe’s voiceover floated through the tablet’s speakers, sweet and polished. “Hey guys, today I’m showing you my personal secret recipe for the ultimate lavender-lemon tart. I spent years refining this balance of citrus and floral notes…”

On the screen, the video showed my hands doing the precise work. Chloe had set up her overhead camera weeks ago, claiming it was just to capture “aesthetic kitchen vibes” for her stream transitions. Instead, she had recorded hours of my silent labor, cut out my face, and edited the footage to look as though she was the master baker behind the creations.

I scrolled down to the comments. Thousands of viewers were praising her culinary genius. Sponsors had noticed, too. A major organic flour brand had pinned a comment announcing a five-figure sponsorship deal based entirely on this “secret recipe” series.

My hands began to shake as I clicked on the analytics tab. The revenue from that single sponsorship deal alone was triple the cost of the entire streaming setup Chloe was demanding I pay for. Her channel’s traffic had surged by four hundred percent in the last month, driven entirely by the videos featuring my recipes and my physical labor. She hadn’t upgraded my career; I had saved hers.

Just then, the kitchen door swung open. Chloe walked back in, holding a fresh green juice, her eyes immediately locking onto the tablet in my hand.

“What are you doing with my tablet?” she demanded, stepping forward to snatch it from me.

I held my ground, keeping the screen facing her. “I’m looking at your ‘secret’ lavender-lemon tart video, Chloe. The one with my hands, my recipe, and the brand-new sponsorship deal that paid you fifteen thousand dollars last week.”

Chloe’s face tightened. She didn’t look remorseful; she looked angry that she had been caught. She set her juice down on the stainless-steel prep table with a hard click. “That’s my channel, Maya. I edited that video. I marketed it. You would never have shown those recipes to anyone anyway. You just wanted to hide in this kitchen forever.”

“You stole my work, lied to your audience, and now you’re trying to force me to pay for the cameras you used to rob me,” I said, my voice dead calm.

“It’s family property!” Chloe raised her voice, stepping closer. “Everything in this bakery belongs to both of us. The recipe is just as much mine to use as it is yours. And you still owe me for the equipment. I bought it, it’s in this kitchen, and you’re going to pay me that five thousand dollars, or I’ll make sure Mom and Dad know you’re trying to ruin my business.”

She was doubling down, using the family leverage to threaten me even after I had uncovered the truth. But as I looked at her defensive stance, I realized she had overlooked a critical detail about the bakery’s digital infrastructure.
