Part 4: The Quiet Exit

Elena gathered her coat from the back of her chair, her voice echoing in the suite. “Dinner reservation is in ten minutes. Let’s start heading out to the lobby.”

Leo stood motionless near the glass partition. The red light on his glasses continued to pulse. On his wrist controller, the warning message remained active: Security Lock Imminent. Verify Developer ID. Sarah walked toward him. She did not raise her voice. She stood two feet away, her tablet screen showing the completed transfer confirmation to the secure cloud folder.

With a brief swipe on her screen, Sarah accessed the plaza’s router control panel using her guest admin credentials. She selected the MAC address of Leo’s Prism-V8 glasses and checked the restriction box. The terminal instantly terminated the device’s data routing, cutting the active connection to the offshore gambling server. A system notification flashed on Leo’s lenses: Network Access Restricted by Local Administrator.

Leo’s eyes widened slightly as the digital columns in his lenses vanished, replaced by a gray connection error screen. He opened his mouth to speak, but Sarah held up her hand, stopping him. She reached into her purse and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper. She slid it into the front pocket of Leo’s jacket.

Inside the fold was the unique, fifteen-character access key to the cloud folder containing the compiled code, timezone logs, and device signatures. Written below the key was a single line: Tell Elena the truth before you leave the plaza, or this link goes to her inbox.

“Are we ready?” Elena asked, walking over and looping her arm through Leo’s. She looked at his face, her expression shifting to minor concern. “Leo? You look pale. Is the system migration still giving you trouble?”

Leo’s shoulders dropped. He looked down at the jacket pocket where the paper rested, then up at Sarah. He did not answer Elena immediately. His hand drifted to his pocket, his fingers pressing against the paper slip inside.

“I… I have to discuss something with you, Elena,” Leo said, his voice flat and strained. He slowly pulled his arm back from hers. “Before we go to the restaurant. We need to talk in the lounge.”

Elena’s smile faded, replaced by confusion. “Now? We’re going to lose the reservation.”

“Now,” Leo repeated, his eyes fixed on the floor.

Sarah stepped past them toward the suite’s exit. She did not look back as Elena began to ask Leo what was wrong. Adjusting her own rental glasses, Sarah dropped them into the return bin by the main doors. She walked out of the OmniPlaza AR Venue, the cool evening air hitting her face as the heavy glass doors slid shut behind her. The digital lights of the plaza faded into the background, leaving only the quiet street ahead.
