Arthur turned back to Leo. “The payload is buffered here on the local network,” Arthur yelled over the fans. “Can we delete the local cache?”

“No!” Leo stammered, shivering in his sweat-soaked shirt. “The local cache is heavily encrypted until the execution timer hits zero. I don’t have the administrative decryption keys for the payload itself!”

Arthur’s eyes darted to the heavy nylon backpack still slung over Leo’s shoulder. The laptop. “The local cache is encrypted, but the prompt origin isn’t. The machine generated this nightmare based on the specific parameters you gave it. If we can access your original prompt and force an emergency overwrite…”

Arthur snatched the backpack from Leo’s shoulder, yanked the silver laptop out, and shoved the bag aside. “The cloud locked your wireless endpoint at the cafe. Hardwire it into the central server switch here. Use a diagnostic cable.”

Leo hesitated, his hands trembling violently. “I… I can’t. It’s against the vendor’s terms of service to bridge a locked terminal directly to the central hub…”

Arthur stepped into Leo’s space, slamming the laptop into the tech worker’s chest. “Do it, or I will personally let you explain to the parents of this district why their second graders are being told to stack themselves into a human meat shield!”

Leo swallowed hard, visibly shrinking under Arthur’s glare. He fumbled a yellow ethernet patch cable from his pocket, plugged one end into the laptop, and jammed the other into the primary server switch.

Instantly, the flashing red command terminal on the laptop screen flickered. The central server’s superior local administrative privileges overrode the cloud’s wireless security lock. The red warning vanished, revealing the desktop.

Arthur pushed Leo aside and took control of the trackpad. He didn’t know the vendor’s proprietary software architecture, but he knew how writers worked. He knew where the rough drafts lived. He opened the file directory and immediately clicked into a folder sitting plainly on the desktop labeled *Generative_Inputs_Beta*.

He opened the master log file. Arthur expected to see standard, lazy bureaucratic prompts: *Write a safety guide for elementary students based on state emergency guidelines.*

Instead, Arthur found thousands of lines of dense, custom-coded instructions. It was a labyrinth of nested conditions and heavily weighted variables. Leo hadn’t just run a standard template. He had built a highly specific, aggressively tuned psychological environment. Arthur had spent his entire twelve-year career agonizing over the emotional impact of a single adjective in a crisis letter. Here, Leo had reduced human terror to raw data points.

Arthur scrolled down, scanning the parameters. He felt the blood drain from his face, the freezing air of the server room suddenly feeling like ice in his veins.

“Leo,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, gravelly whisper. “What are these source files?”

Arthur kept scrolling. He found the specific generation branch that led to the ‘biological wedge.’ But there was more. Beneath the door barricade instruction, Arthur found the AI’s secondary directive-the part of the safety flyer that was supposed to print on the back page.

The AI wasn’t malfunctioning. It was functioning exactly as Leo had programmed it to. It was doing the math. If an active shooter entered a room, throwing twenty children armed with scissors at the attacker’s legs would statistically delay the shooter by a few seconds. To a machine fed on psychotic manifestos and crime scene body counts, sacrificing forty percent of a kindergarten class to buy three seconds of time was a perfectly logical equation.

Arthur slowly stood up from the console. The digital clock in the corner of the screen read eleven-fifty-six. Four minutes.

He looked at Leo. The junior tech coordinator was sweating profusely, wiping his brow with the back of his trembling hand.

“You didn’t just run a program,” Arthur said, his voice deadly quiet. “You built a psychopath. You fed a machine the darkest, most twisted thoughts of murderers, removed all human empathy, and asked it how to win a body count.”

“I was trying to save lives!” Leo cried, his voice cracking violently over the roar of the fans. “The math works, Arthur! The simulations showed a fifteen percent increase in overall school survival if the local classroom assets provide physical friction! We had to think outside the box!”

“They are children, Leo!” Arthur roared, the sound echoing harshly off the metal racks. “They aren’t physical friction! They aren’t local classroom assets! They are little kids!”

Arthur stepped toward him, his fists clenched tightly at his sides. “You knew exactly what this thing was generating. You set the acceptable casualty rate. You wrote the prompt that told them to use scissors.”

Leo pressed his back hard against the steel server cabinet. His mouth opened and closed, but no words came out. He stared at Arthur, his terrified eyes darting from Arthur’s furious face to the countdown clock ticking relentlessly down to zero. The deafening hum of the cooling fans filled the freezing space between them, waiting for a justification that didn’t exist.
