Part 2: The Financial Lifeline

“Hello? Who is this?” The voice on the other end was laced with sharp irritation, completely stripped of the smooth, empathetic equalization Leo had just heard on the podcast.

Leo squeezed his eyes shut, trying to steady his breathing. “Sarah. My name is Leo.”

A heavy beat of silence stretched across the line. The faint sound of typing abruptly stopped. “How did you get this number?” she demanded, her professional tone instantly replaced by defensive hostility. “This is a private, unlisted cellular line.”

“It’s on your public LLC filing,” Leo said, keeping his voice as low as possible so the acoustics of the empty, fluorescent-lit corridor wouldn’t carry his words to the council chamber doors. “It took me two minutes to find it. Sarah, listen to me. I need you to pull that audio clip down right now. Today.”

She let out a breathy, skeptical scoff. “Excuse me? I am broadcasting the findings of a legitimate, independent investigation. If you have a formal statement to make regarding the discrepancies in the fire department logs, you can submit it in writing to my press email. I’m not taking anything down just because you’re uncomfortable with public scrutiny.”

“It is not public scrutiny, it is a complete fabrication,” Leo pleaded, pressing his good shoulder against the cold cinderblock wall. “You don’t understand the timing of this. I am standing outside the municipal chambers right now. In less than five minutes, the budget committee is voting on the operational grant for my youth crisis center. We have forty-two teenagers sleeping in our dorms right now. If the council members see your clip, they will pull my funding to avoid the controversy. My center will be bankrupt by the end of the month, and those kids will be back on the streets just as the freeze sets in.”

“Don’t try to manipulate me with guilt,” Sarah snapped back, though her voice wavered slightly. “My guest has a forensic data expert who analyzed the dispatch times. We have the proof. And just so you know, I am recording this call right now. ‘Local hero threatens independent journalist’ is going to make a great opening segment for episode two.”

Leo felt the thick, ridged scar tissue along his left arm pulse with a phantom, burning heat. He opened his mouth to offer to meet her in person, to show her the horrific, unmistakable medical reality of his skin grafts, but a heavy thud echoed down the hall.

The wooden doors of the council chamber swung open again. A young municipal aide named Marcus, who had always been a vocal supporter of the youth center, stepped out into the hallway. Marcus was pale. He held a glowing tablet tight against his chest. He looked up, locked eyes with Leo, and immediately looked away, his expression twisting into a wince of profound discomfort. Marcus walked over to the security guard, whispered something in the man’s ear, and handed him the tablet. The guard looked at the screen, then slowly looked up at Leo.

Leo’s stomach plummeted into a bottomless freefall. The algorithm had done its work. The clip had breached the chamber.

Desperation clawed up Leo’s throat. He pulled the phone away from his ear for a split second, glancing at the corporate registry still open on his mobile browser. He scrolled past Sarah’s phone number to the capitalization table. The LLC was entirely bankrolled by a single corporate sponsor: a regional mattress company called RestWell Holdings, providing her server hosting, advertising revenue, and legal umbrella.

He brought the phone back to his face. He had to play a card he despised.

“Sarah, I am looking at your corporate disclosures,” Leo said, his voice dropping into a flat, trembling absolute. “I see RestWell Holdings is your primary financial guarantor. I know you’re an indie creator. I know this viral clip is probably the first real money you’ve seen. But if you do not delete that audio file right now, I am going to have my center’s pro bono legal team file an emergency injunction for malicious defamation, and I will name RestWell as a co-defendant. They are a family brand. They will drop your sponsorship in a heartbeat to avoid a lawsuit about attacking a children’s charity. I will freeze your LLC’s bank accounts before tomorrow morning.”

Silence hung on the line, thick and suffocating.

“You’re bluffing,” she whispered, but the fierce confidence was entirely gone from her voice.

“Do you want to bet your entire livelihood on the delusions of a conspiracy theorist?” Leo asked, hating the cruel, corporate coldness of his own words. “Take it down. Now. Or I destroy your funding.”

“You’re proving my point,” Sarah hissed, her breathing ragged. “You’re exactly the kind of corrupt, manipulative monster he said you were. You’d ruin my life just to keep your secret safe.”

“Sarah, please, just look at the human cost-”

“The full, uncut interview is rendering right now,” she interrupted, her voice rising in panicked defiance. “I was going to wait a week. But I’m uploading the rest of it right now. Let the city council listen to the whole truth while you try to lie to their faces.”

The line went dead.

Leo stared at the flashing ‘Call Ended’ screen. At the end of the hallway, the security guard unclipped the velvet rope barring the chamber doors. Marcus stepped forward, his face completely drained of color.

“Leo,” Marcus called out, his voice echoing sharply in the quiet corridor. “The committee is ready for you. But they don’t want to hear the budget presentation anymore. They want you to answer some questions about a recording they just received.”
