Part 3: The Glass Anchor
The heavy brass deadbolt snapped into place with a hollow, echoing click. Maya leaned her back against the cool oak door, her heart hammering a frantic, uneven rhythm against her ribs. She had done it. She had crossed the threshold, leaving behind the cold algorithms, the bio-contamination flags, and the terrifying reality of her revoked housing voucher.
The private green room was a sensory overload of aggressively curated luxury. Bouquets of white lilies choked the air with a sickly-sweet perfume that completely masked the faint smell of industrial frying oil still clinging to Maya’s faded jacket. A wall-to-wall vanity mirror, surrounded by blinding incandescent bulbs, dominated the far side of the space.
And beneath that mirror, huddled on the plush lavender carpet, was the woman who had kept Maya alive for the past two years.
Sloane did not seem to hear the lock engage. She was hunched over her knees, her emerald dress bunched up around her thighs to expose pale, shivering skin. Her hands were tangled in her own golden hair, pulling at the roots with violent, jerky movements that made Maya wince. A guttural, wet sound tore from Sloane’s throat, a noise so raw and ugly it made Maya’s breath catch in her chest.
Maya reached up and pressed the tiny wireless earbud deeper into her right ear canal. *”You have to know that your true family is waiting to catch you,”* the recorded Sloane whispered into her mind, her tone smooth, invulnerable, and utterly perfect.
Maya took a slow step forward, her non-slip shoes squeaking faintly against a stray piece of plastic on the carpet. She looked down. It was a translucent orange prescription bottle, its child-proof cap discarded and lying upside down near her toe. Maya’s gaze tracked from the empty bottle up to the marble surface of the vanity.
Amidst the expensive makeup palettes, discarded false eyelashes, and crumpled tissues lay a scattered mess of crushed blue pills, flattened into a jagged, uneven powder. A heavy glass hydro-flask, custom-etched with Sloane’s stylized wellness logo, sat dangerously close to the edge of the table, its heavy metallic base smeared with white dust.
Sloane was self-medicating. Sloane was drowning.
The realization didn’t fracture Maya’s devotion; it galvanized it entirely. The handlers with their earpieces, the crushing pressure of millions of demanding eyes, the toxic system of the entertainment grid-it was destroying her idol just as surely as Manager Dave and the productivity AI had destroyed Maya. The universe had taken Maya’s livelihood and her home, but it had given her this sacred purpose instead. She was here to catch Sloane. They were two broken pieces meant to snap together.
“Sloane,” Maya whispered, her voice trembling with an overwhelming surge of reverence and relief.
The influencer froze. The guttural sobbing instantly ceased, leaving a suffocating silence in the brightly lit room.
Sloane slowly lifted her head. Her flawless, camera-ready face was a catastrophic mess. Smeared foundation and thick, black mascara tracked down her cheeks in jagged lines. Her eyes, usually sparkling with manufactured warmth on the daily vlogs, were wide, bloodshot, and frantic. They locked onto Maya, absorbing the sight of the unwashed hair, the cheap clothes, and the holographic VIP pass dangling over Maya’s chest.
Sloane’s panicked gaze darted to the locked door, then back to Maya, then up to the damning evidence of the crushed pills littering the vanity.
“It’s okay,” Maya said, taking another step into the glaring light of the vanity bulbs. She reached out a hand, palm up, mirroring the exact gesture she had seen Sloane use in a dozen guided meditation videos. “I know they’re hurting you. I know how heavy the anchor is. I locked them out. We’re safe now.”
“Who the hell are you?” Sloane hissed.
The voice didn’t match the melodic purr playing in the earbud. It was guttural, scraping, and entirely devoid of empathy. It sounded exactly like an animal backed into a dark corner.
“I’m part of the VIP tribe,” Maya said, her hopeful smile wavering for a fraction of a second before she forced it back into place. “I lost my job today. I lost my apartment to the system. They took everything. But then I realized, just like you said in yesterday’s broadcast, I had to shed the things that didn’t serve a higher purpose. I’m here. I can help you heal.”
Sloane pushed herself backward against the base of the vanity, her manicured hands scrambling for purchase against the lavender carpet. Her eyes were wildly dilated, darting between Maya’s outstretched hand and the crushed narcotics on the table above her. Maya watched the influencer’s face contort. The initial shock of an intruder seemed to curdle into something far more dangerous as Sloane registered that Maya was staring directly at the white powder. The pristine, untouchable wellness guru was being witnessed in her most pathetic, drug-addled state by a bottom-tier fan.
“You locked the door,” Sloane breathed, her chest heaving violently under the torn emerald silk. “You locked me in here.”
“To keep them away,” Maya promised, taking another eager step forward. She was close enough now to smell the sharp tang of sweat and sour alcohol radiating from the woman she worshipped. “You don’t have to pretend with me. We’re family. Just let go.”
“Family?” Sloane’s voice cracked, rising in pitch until it was a shrill, hysterical screech. “You’re a disgusting, delusional freak!”
Maya flinched, her outstretched hand freezing in mid-air. The words struck her with the force of a physical blow, slicing through the warm, melodic narration still looping in her right ear. *”Beautiful things are waiting just on the other side of fear,”* the earbud whispered.
“Sloane, please, you’re just spiraling,” Maya pleaded, stepping even closer, desperate to bridge the gap. “You need-”
“I need you to get the fuck away from me!” Sloane screamed. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. The terrified vulnerability vanished entirely, replaced by a vicious, frantic need to obliterate the witness to her darkest reality.
Before Maya could process the violent shift in behavior, Sloane spun upward toward the vanity. Her hand clamped around the neck of the heavy glass hydro-flask. She didn’t hesitate. She didn’t shout for security.
Driven by the terrifying threat of her shattered image, Sloane lunged forward with a guttural roar, swinging the thick glass cylinder like a club.
Maya barely had time to raise her arms in defense. The heavy, rhinestone-studded base of the flask smashed into the side of Maya’s head with a sickening, wet crunch.
A blinding flash of white-hot pain exploded behind Maya’s eyes. The crushing impact threw her off balance, her non-slip kitchen shoes completely failing to grip the carpet as she collapsed hard onto her side. The room tilted violently. A sharp, high-pitched ringing pierced her left ear, while her right earbud was driven agonizingly deep into her ear canal by the blow.
Maya gasped, tasting copper as blood immediately welled up in her hairline, hot and fast, streaming down her cheek and dripping onto the lavender floor. She blinked through the sudden, disorienting haze of trauma, looking up.
Sloane stood towering over her. The influencer was panting heavily, her teeth bared in a feral grimace, her knuckles white as she raised the blood-smeared glass flask for a second strike. The warm, perfect voice of the vlog continued to whisper its hollow promises of love and empathy directly into Maya’s bleeding ear, hopelessly disconnected from the savage reality descending upon her.
