Part 3: The Decoded Feed
I bypassed Julianne’s rigid form and reached behind the console terminal. The wrong word she had used in the den earlier-substituting “guild” for “household”-kept looping in my mind. It was a syntax error, a mechanical slip-up that proved she wasn’t formulating her own thoughts. That single verbal glitch was the catalyst that made me stop pleading and start looking for technical proof. I grabbed the secondary diagnostics cable from my desk drawer and plugged it directly into the open monitoring port on the silver splitter box, intercepting the signal flowing through the thick, braided fiber-optic headset cable.
I booted my laptop. The diagnostic interface flickered to life, showing raw data streams scrolling down the screen. I set the software to decode the packet headers coming through the secondary line. On the right side of my monitor, a clean text window initialized. It was labeled: *Audio-Visual Overlay Stream – Channel 4.*
For a moment, the screen was blank. Then, a line of glowing green text appeared:
`[CONNECTION ESTABLISHED – GIDEON_DIRECTOR]`
`[PROMPT FEED ACTIVE]`
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the screen, then at the back of Julianne’s covered head. A new line of text scrolled into view on my monitor:
`[SCRIPT: “Mark, your continuous auditing of our accounts is a violation of my personal boundaries.”]`
Three seconds passed. In the chair next to me, Julianne cleared her throat. Her voice was flat, matching the exact rhythm of the scrolling text. “Mark, your continuous auditing of our accounts is a violation of my personal boundaries.”
I felt a cold sweat break out across my neck. I looked back at the monitor. The script updated instantly:
`[IF SUBJECT PRESSES: Execute DEFLECTION_09 – “The guild assets are locked in a high-yield venture that protects our future.”]`
“Is that what you call our savings?” I asked, my voice trembling as I stared at the interface. “A high-yield venture?”
Julianne did not hesitate. Her chest rose. “The guild assets are locked in a high-yield venture that protects our future.”
She was reading the prompts in real-time, projected onto the internal screen of her visor. Gideon was typing these lines, or an automated program was generating them based on my audio inputs, sending them down the braided fiber-optic cable to keep her isolated from me. She had surrendered her actual voice to a remote controller.
On the screen, a new command line flashed in bright red text:
`[ALERT: PHYSICAL INTERFERENCE DETECTED on SPLITTER_02. TERMINATE DISCUSSION immediately. AUTHORIZE FULL ASSET MIGRATION TO PREVENT ACCOUNT FREEZE.]`
Julianne’s hands suddenly tightened on the armrests. She began to stand up, her movements stiff and awkward under the weight of the headset, her fingers reaching blindly toward the console terminal to protect the connection. The pressure in the room shifted instantly; the illusion of a domestic argument was gone, replaced by the clinical execution of a remote command.
