Part 3: The Thermal Coupling
I watched the thermal printer finish its run. The narrow strip of paper coiled onto the linoleum floor, a physical record of Marcus’s absence. Marcus did not look down at it. He kept his chin tilted up, his gaze fixed on the blinking blue LED of the sensor bracelet resting on Helen’s desk.
“The logs are irrelevant if the device was compromised,” Marcus said. He gestured toward the graduate students, who were carefully avoiding eye contact. “You modified the telemetry hardware without a peer review, Helen. You bypassed the signal filters. In the medical department’s eyes, that is direct sabotage of a clinical prototype. You risked her safety to avoid the alert noise.”
Helen reached down and picked up the silver-plated band. Her fingers traced the edge of the textured nylon strap where the small metal contacts met the fabric. “I modified the coupling because of the heat, Marcus.”
“The telemetry runs on micro-amp signals,” Marcus said, his voice rising slightly, though he kept his posture rigid. “It doesn’t generate heat.”
“It does when the receiver is constantly searching for a baseline server that isn’t responding,” Helen said. She turned back to the terminal and clicked through to the hardware diagnostics page. She pointed to a line graph showing a series of sharp, red spikes in the power distribution column. “Because you never calibrated the home router, the bracelet was constantly looping its search protocols. The silver contact plates on the underside were reaching forty-two degrees Celsius. It was leaving red, blistered patches on her skin.”
Marcus shifted his weight, his leather shoes squeaking against the lab floor. He reached for his phone, tapping the screen before putting it back in his pocket. “You should have submitted a hardware ticket.”
“A ticket takes three weeks to clear the university safety committee,” Helen replied. Her voice remained even, flat, and quiet. “I adjusted the frequency to reduce the thermal load. I did it five minutes after I found her trying to tear the band off her wrist because it was burning her.”
I looked at the mirrored monitor at my console. The diagnostic logs confirmed the voltage drop. The change had occurred exactly six weeks ago, precisely when the temperature spikes had flattened back to baseline levels.
Marcus took a step back, his hand resting on the edge of a cryogenic cooling line. “The department doesn’t care about your excuses, Helen. You altered active medical telemetry on a university-funded project. If I take this to the dean, your name is off the patent before the end of the week. You’ll lose your research status, your access keys, and your funding.”
He leaned forward, his voice dropping to a sharp whisper. “You want to play administrator? Let’s see how your credentials hold up when the compliance board reviews a modified medical sensor. Sign the patent release over to my name, or I file the formal violation report tonight.”
