Leo’s hand remained pressed against the intercom switch, his knuckles white against the gray plastic housing. He did not look at me; his eyes were fixed on Sarah, who stood by the primary terminal. The red warning light on the console continued to spin, casting long, rotating shadows across the room, but the room itself remained entirely silent except for the cooling pumps.

“If the array is decaying, the safety board needs to clear the floor,” Sarah said. She did not reach for the override key. Instead, she took a step back, her boots squeaking on the polished floor. “Why are you blocking the call, Leo?”

“Because they will shut us down for months over a transient spike,” Leo said. His chest rose and fell in short, rapid motions. “We can stabilize it ourselves. Just sign the witness override. Once the registry accepts the bypass, I can initiate the manual purge.”

I turned my attention to the secondary monitor, pulling up the live telemetry feed from Leo’s sensor bracelet. The device was calibrated to measure localized thermal, magnetic, and bio-stability metrics during high-energy procedures. If the entanglement array were truly undergoing containment decay, the localized electromagnetic field in the room should have registered a corresponding rise.

The graph on my monitor was a straight, level line. The ambient field strength sat at exactly 1.02 Tesla-the standard baseline calibration for an inactive array.

“Leo,” I said, pointing at the secondary display. “The bracelet isn’t registering any localized variance. The ambient sensors are flat.”

Leo did not look at the screen. He kept his body positioned between me and the intercom panel. “The bracelet’s transceiver must be lagging behind the console’s physical sensors. The terminal feed is the primary metric. Look at the decay curve on the main monitor.”

“The transceiver uses a dedicated fiber link,” I said. “It doesn’t lag. If the array were decaying at the rate showing on your screen, your bracelet would be triggering its own internal thermal alarm.”

Sarah walked over to my desk. She leaned over my shoulder, her gaze scanning the raw data columns on the secondary monitor. She reached out and tapped the glass, highlighting the real-time data packets streaming from Leo’s wrist.

“The data packets are timestamped,” Sarah said, her voice dropping to a quiet, even tone. She turned to look at her brother. “They are updating every fifty milliseconds. The ambient field is stable. There is no decay.”

“The main monitor says otherwise,” Leo said. He pointed his finger at the flashing terminal, though he did not move away from the intercom. “Are you going to trust a secondary wrist strap over the main system diagnostics? We are running out of time.”

“Then we run a live calibration test,” Sarah said. She reached for the terminal keyboard. “If we initiate a live test, it will ping the array directly and compare it to your bracelet’s sensor history. The result will log automatically to the campus registry.”

Leo’s hand slowly slid down the intercom switch, but he did not step away from the wall. His fingers curled into a fist.

“We don’t need a live test,” Leo said, his voice dropping. “A live test will interrupt the current calibration run.”

I moved my mouse over the execution command for the sensor test. The cursor hovered over the flashing confirmation box.
