Part 4: The Double Lockout

Mr. Henderson reached out and took the thermal printout from Clara Vance’s fingers. He held it close, his eyes scanning the timestamp and the override code. He then looked down at the console screen, where the G_BROOKS_09 session was still active. ‘Gerald,’ Mr. Henderson said. His voice was quiet, but it carried clearly across the marble lobby. ‘Explain the remote authorization override.’ Gerald cleared his throat. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, his hands gripped tightly behind his back. ‘The caller identified himself as Arthur Vance, the primary account holder on the master profile. He provided the remote registration code. He stated there was a safety issue. I acted to protect the guest and the property.’ ‘Did you verify the caller’s identity against our database record?’ Mr. Henderson asked. ‘He had the profile code,’ Gerald said, his voice straining. ‘It matched the record.’ ‘Did you call the room before using the key?’ Mr. Henderson asked. Gerald did not answer immediately. He looked at the floor, his jaw tightening. ‘There was no answer on the line.’ ‘I was in the room the entire time,’ Clara Vance said, her voice steady and loud enough for the entire lobby to hear. ‘The desk phone did not ring once. The system log will prove that too.’ The crowd of guests watched the interaction, their attention fixed on Mr. Henderson. No one in the line moved. The silence in the lobby was absolute, save for the hum of the air conditioning. Mr. Henderson turned back to the terminal. He tapped the keyboard, pulling up the call log for Suite 402. He stared at the screen for several seconds, then looked back at Gerald. ‘There are no incoming calls to Suite 402 on today’s log. None.’ Gerald’s face grew pale. He opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. He adjusted his vest again, his fingers trembling slightly. ‘You accepted a remote request and bypassed our security protocols,’ Mr. Henderson said. ‘You entered a guest’s locked room without authorization, and you attempted to cover the transaction using an unrelated corporate profile code.’ ‘It was an administrative decision,’ Gerald muttered, his voice barely audible. ‘I was managing a profile client.’ ‘You breached the trust of this hotel,’ Mr. Henderson said. He reached over the counter, tapped the screen, and navigated to the user management console. He clicked the deactivation button. The screen flashed with a red confirmation box: User G_BROOKS_09 Terminated. Mr. Henderson pointed toward the back office door. ‘Leave your master key on the desk, Gerald. Security will escort you to your locker to retrieve your personal items.’ Gerald stood still for a few seconds. He slowly pulled the master RFID card from his pocket and laid it on the marble counter. He turned and walked through the office door without looking back. The latch clicked shut. Mr. Henderson turned to Clara Vance. ‘Ms. Vance, your room lock is being recoded immediately. Your new keys will be delivered to you personally by our head of security.’ He then looked at the guests waiting in the lobby. ‘Starting immediately, this hotel is implementing a double-authentication rule. The keycard encoders have been reprogrammed. No duplicate keycard can be generated without two separate employee logins and a physical scan of a photo ID. No single staff member, including myself, will have the ability to override this block.’ Mr. Henderson walked to each terminal, entering the new system commands. I watched the encoder lights shift from solid green to a flashing blue state, requiring a secondary login. Clara Vance picked up her purse, gave a short nod to the owner, and walked toward the elevators. The crowd in the lobby began to move again, the tension fading as the front desk staff began checking in the remaining guests under the new protocol.
