My boss accused me of ruining his family during a staff meeting, until I opened his project folder – Part 2

Part 2: The Discrepancy

Marcus kept his eyes fixed on the pink receipt as Sarah’s hand froze over the open project folder. The printed slip detailed a booking deposit for a seven-night stay at the Whispering Pines Luxury Resort, scheduled to begin the following Monday. The name on the billing line was Arthur’s, and the total deposit amount charged to his card was exactly four thousand five hundred dollars-the precise figure he had just claimed was desperately needed for his sister’s emergency medical care.

Arthur remained focused on the projector screen, clearing his throat loudly to signal his continued displeasure to the room. “Since Sarah has decided that personal empathy isn’t part of our department culture, we will have to adjust the project timeline. I’ll need to see the master design assets today so I can approve the handoff before my attention is pulled elsewhere.”

Sarah did not look up at Arthur. She slowly slid her hand over the pink receipt, her fingers folding it closed before slipping it back into the secure inner sleeve of the matte-blue project folder. Marcus noticed that her breathing remained steady, but the muscles in her jaw were set tight.

Without saying a word, Sarah pulled her laptop toward her and opened the file manager. Marcus, sitting close enough to see her screen, watched her select the entire directory of the upcoming product launch. She did not upload them to the shared team drive where Arthur had full delete-and-edit permissions. Instead, she initiated a secure transfer to the company’s corporate archive server-a secure repository that required corporate HR and executive-level security clearance to modify, completely bypassing Arthur’s administrative access. The progress bar crept slowly across her screen.

“Sarah, did you hear me?” Arthur asked, tapping his pen against the table with increasing irritation. “I need the project folder. Pass it over so I can review the asset list before the end of the meeting.”

Sarah closed her laptop with a quiet, deliberate click. She kept her hand firmly on top of the matte-blue folder, holding it close to her side of the table. “I need to verify a few line items on the project budget sheet before I hand it over, Arthur. I will bring it directly to your office after the meeting is finished.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed, his pen pausing mid-tap. “The budget sheet is already approved, Sarah. There’s no reason to hold onto the folder. Just hand it over now so we can wrap this up and get back to work.”

Marcus watched the silent standoff between the two. The other team members remained perfectly still, the tension in the room thick enough to feel. Arthur reached his hand across the table, palm up, waiting for her to physically transfer the folder. Sarah merely stared back at him, her grip on the blue cardboard tightening just enough to crease the edges as she sat in silence.
