Part 2: The Override
The input telemetry on my monitor did not match the voice coming out of the speakers. Vance’s fingers on his webcam feed were a blur, executing complex registry commands that only certified systems administrators used. He did not hesitate, nor did he search for keys. He used advanced Linux syntax to bypass the district’s local firewall block, all while maintaining his helpless tone.
‘It’s just spinning,’ Vance lied over the audio feed, his tone soft and defeated. ‘I guess we’ll have to cancel today’s sessions, Sarah. Unless you can call IT and get them to override it from their end? I really don’t want the board thinking we’re neglecting the curriculum, but my hands are tied here.’
Sarah sat back, rubbing her temples. ‘I’ll submit a priority ticket to Leo.’
‘No need, Sarah,’ I said, unmuting my mic from the lobby. ‘I’m already monitoring the session. I see the lockout.’
There was a three-second silence on the line. Vance’s cursor froze instantly in the terminal window.
‘Ah, Leo,’ Vance said, his tone shifting slightly, losing its soft edge. ‘Yes, this system is a complete mystery to me. I was just tapping keys hoping something would work. Did I mess it up further?’
‘The terminal logs show an active command override sequence from your IP,’ I said. ‘It bypassed the district firewall.’
‘I must have clicked a pop-up,’ Vance said quickly. ‘You know how these machines are. I just clicked “yes” to whatever appeared.’
‘The command you ran requires a local security hash and a manual root bypass,’ I replied, keeping my voice level. ‘It isn’t a pop-up option.’
Vance leaned closer to his webcam. His face was no longer relaxed in mock confusion; his jaw was set, and his eyes narrowed slightly as he stared into his camera lens. ‘Well, whatever it was, it seems to have resolved itself. Sarah, since Leo has fixed it, please proceed with the student roster upload. I have a district budget call to attend.’
He disconnected from the call, leaving Sarah to handle the rest of the three-hour session alone.
I sat back at my desk and pulled up the local server logs. Because Vance had bypassed the firewall using his personal administrator credential file, the system had flagged the event as a security exception. Under district policy, all flagged exceptions automatically triggered a localized high-definition webcam and desktop capture backup, saved directly to the secure IT archive.
I opened the newly generated file: Webcam Recording File WR-904.
I hit play. On the left side of the split screen, the recording showed Vance’s desktop. On the right side, the high-definition webcam feed captured his face.
There was no confusion in his expression. The moment the lockout screen had appeared, he had reached for his second keyboard, his eyes scanning three separate monitors. His hand movements were deliberate, his face calm and focused as he typed the exact override codes. The recording captured every keystroke, followed by him muting his microphone for a split second to mutter, ‘Too easy,’ before unmuting to tell Sarah his system was broken.
