The blue status indicator on the token’s secure lobby docking station pulsed steady and slow, completely contradicting his frantic shouting. He leaned over the barrier, blocking my view of the security monitors, and insisted that if I didn’t bypass the registration log immediately, the entire quantum server cluster would melt down within fifteen minutes.
Behind the reinforced glass of the security desk, I kept my hand resting flat on the open visitor log book. The lobby was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of the building’s air filtration system and the faint, distant click of a server cooling fan.
“Julian,” I said, keeping my voice level. “Dr. Sarah Vance is off-site at the conference. Her token remains docked. To release it, there must be a logged work order or an active alarm.”

“If the cooling core is failing, I need to call the off-site facility engineering team immediately,” I said. “They are on standby for system anomalies.”
“No!” Julian yelled, his hands flying up. “If you call them, they’ll initiate a full hard-shutdown of the sector grid. That will corrupt the current simulation. Sarah specifically said to use her token to adjust the coolant flow manually from the local terminal inside.”
