Part 3: The Keyhole Protocol
In our damp basement database office, the green LEDs on the server racks flickered, casting long shadows across the concrete floor. Sarah’s hand remained flat over the device, her knuckles white against the dark plastic. Tyler’s arm stayed extended, his fingers hovering inches above hers, but he did not touch her hand. The hum of the cooling fans was the only sound for several seconds.
Tyler cleared his throat again, his voice dropping an octave as he attempted to regain his professional composure. “If you mount the partition while the shard state is dirty, the client protocol triggers a hard fork recovery. It will wipe the memory enclave to prevent an address leak. Marcus, do not initialize that terminal.”
I did not look at Tyler. I reached for the black braided USB-C cable Sarah had laid down. My hands were dry and steady. I plugged the type-A end into my workstation’s front port. On my secondary monitor, the system registered the connection but displayed a warning: USB Port Active – Awaiting Device Interface.
Tyler’s hand dropped to his side. He took a half-step back, his eyes moving rapidly from my screen to Sarah’s face, then back to the device. “Marcus, you don’t have authorization to debug this client account. If the ledger logs a local connection from an unverified IP, it breaks the segregation architecture. The pooling shards will desynchronize permanently, and the transaction hash will be voided.”
Sarah ignored him. She did not blink. She slid the hardware wallet across the desk mat toward me, keeping her palm flat until it rested against my keyboard. I inserted the USB-C end into the device. The tiny screen on the wallet flickered, displaying the lock icon and the prompt: Enter PIN.
Tyler spoke faster now, his words running together. “The PIN won’t work on that derivation path. I set up a secondary keyhole protocol to protect the shards. If you enter the standard PIN, the device will flag it as a hostile intrusion and execute an internal key destruction sequence. Sarah, don’t touch it. Let me take it back to the node upstairs where the environment is controlled.”
Sarah did not look up at him. She reached out and pressed the first button on the device. The screen registered a dot. She pressed three more buttons in a steady, unhurried cadence, her finger clicking the plastic switches. Tyler’s breathing became audible in the quiet of the basement. He did not move to stop her. He watched her finger press the final confirmation button.
The wallet’s screen changed. It read: Welcome. On my monitor, the Ledger Live application refreshed, displaying a prompt: Allow ledger manager on your device?
Sarah pressed the right button on the physical wallet to confirm the connection. On my screen, the progress bar began to fill. Tyler leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of my partition. “If that progress bar finishes before the shard epoch resets, the entire forty thousand dollars is gone. It will be trapped in the unrouted mempool forever. You’re destroying your own money, Sarah.”
