Part 3: The Longer Timeline Put Kayla Inside the Part She Cut Out
Every head in the room turned toward that new screen.
The phone lighting up across the studio belonged to one of the digital assistants by the camera monitors. She lifted it over a coil of cable and said, “This one has the full thread.” Nobody told her to come forward. She did anyway, because at that point the whole shoot had narrowed down to whoever could show the next ten seconds.
I crossed the lane before anybody else could block her. Gabe stepped in from the sponsor table at the same time, contract folder still tucked under his arm now instead of lying flat where it had been all morning. That was the first concrete move he had made with it. Not a speech. Not a threat. Just the folder off the table and in his hand.
“Put it where everyone can see it,” he said.
The assistant held the phone out between the makeup mirrors and the ring light spill. People bunched up without pretending they were working anymore. Tessa stayed right by her rolling kit. Avery stood near the tape mark with both hands down at their sides. Kayla did the opposite of moving closer. She backed toward Brielle’s side of the room and kept her own phone angled in at her body.
The longer timeline started before the line Kayla had been replaying.
It showed the backstage touch-up corner from farther back, shaky and vertical, with the mirror bulbs blown bright in the frame. Tessa was blotting Avery’s forehead. I passed behind them for half a second, headset on my wrist, exactly where I remembered being during reset. Then Kayla’s voice came in from behind the phone.
“Wait, wait, this is the real Avery,” she said.
Avery turned at the sound before Tessa reached in again with the sponge. On the screen, Avery lifted one hand toward the phone, not toward Tessa.
“Kayla, do not film me back here,” Avery said.
Kayla laughed on the recording. “Why, because the brand might see?”
Then Tessa stepped in to finish the touch-up while Avery was still turning away from the lens. Avery flinched at the same moment and said, clearly this time, “If that camera is still on me backstage, stop and don’t touch me while I’m turning around.”
That was the whole sentence. Not the cut-off version. Not the one Kayla had thrown into the room like a grenade.
The assistant replayed it before anybody even asked.
On the second pass, the details got sharper instead of smaller. Kayla’s own voice. Kayla pushing in closer. Kayla provoking the exchange before the line she had posted. Tessa’s hand arriving in the middle of Avery trying to turn away from being filmed.
“Pause there,” Gabe said.
The frame froze with Kayla’s reflection visible in the mirror glass, phone up, shoulders forward.
Nobody filled the silence this time. It was too plain.
Avery didn’t raise their voice. They pointed at the frozen frame. “That’s why I said stop.”
Tessa pointed too. “And that’s why I said she cropped it.”
Kayla started talking before the phone even lowered. “That doesn’t change how Avery spoke to staff. That doesn’t make it okay.”
“You don’t get to act like you were invisible in your own video,” I said, before I could stop myself.
A few heads snapped toward me because I almost never jump in like that. Gabe didn’t look at me. He kept looking at Kayla.
Brielle finally spoke, and she kept her voice careful. “Kayla, did you post that version after cutting the first part out?”
Kayla turned on her. “Oh, now you’re doing this?”
“Answer her,” Gabe said.
Kayla’s grip tightened around her phone. “I posted the part that mattered.”
That sentence hit harder than if she had admitted it cleanly. There it was in the open: not the full minute, not confusion, not a bad angle. A choice.
Gabe held out his hand one more time. “Your phone. Now.”
“No,” Kayla said. Loud enough that the word bounced off the mirrors.
A couple of people in the back started murmuring all at once. One creator near the monitor said, “She knew.” Another said, “She streamed that?” The room was tipping fast again, but not in Kayla’s direction anymore.
Gabe shifted the contract folder to one hand and pointed with the other toward the studio entrance. “Then here’s the choice. Kayla leaves the floor now, or Brielle’s content block is paused with Avery’s until I review every post tied to this set. I am not letting a cropped backstage recording decide this campaign.”
That landed on Brielle too. She took two quick steps away from Kayla and said, “Do not drag my deliverables into your mess.”
Kayla looked from Gabe to Brielle to the phones still aimed at her. Then the digital assistant, still holding the longer timeline, scrolled up one inch and said, “There are comments asking why the beginning got cut.”
Gabe’s face changed right there. He turned the contract folder flat against his palm and said, “Then we are correcting this in the same room it was used in, right now.”
And he reached for the studio monitor so the full clip could go bigger than Kayla’s phone ever did.
