Part 2: Under the Bright Lights
The cameras began to roll, casting a bright, harsh glare against the marble walls of the probate hallway. Julian Vance stepped up to the microphone, his voice echoing warmly through the second-floor corridor. “This inlaid mahogany keepsake box represents the very heart of my late uncle’s estate,” Julian announced to the small crowd of local reporters and charity board members. “And today, my cousin Clara and I are proud to return it to the community that Arthur loved so dearly.”
Thomas Higgins watched from behind the clerk’s partition, his eyes tracking the presentation. From this angle, he could see both the smiling profile Julian presented to the lenses and the rigid posture of Clara, who stood two paces back, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She looked exactly like a supportive heir, just as Julian had demanded, but her fingers were pressed together so hard the skin was entirely bloodless. She kept her gaze fixed on the mahogany box rather than the cameras.
The charity representative stepped forward to accept the keepsake. The wood caught the glare of the television lights, the intricate brass inlay gleaming as Julian handed it over with a practiced, solemn nod. “We wanted to ensure Arthur’s legacy was preserved without any family squabbles or delay,” Julian continued, glancing back at Clara with an encouraging smile. “Our family has always believed in transparency and stewardship.”
A reporter raised a hand, her voice cutting through the applause. “Mr. Vance, there have been rumors that some of the estate’s larger assets, specifically the investment portfolios, have been liquidated ahead of the formal probate closing. Can you comment on the progress of the final accounting?”
Thomas leaned slightly closer to the counter, watching Julian’s reaction. Julian didn’t blink. His smile remained perfectly intact, his posture relaxed. “We are moving strictly according to the court’s timeline. Every transaction is fully documented, and Clara and I are working hand-in-hand to ensure everything is resolved smoothly. Isn’t that right, Clara?”
He turned slightly, inviting her into the frame. Clara met Julian’s gaze. For a second, the hallway went quiet except for the hum of the camera equipment. Clara’s mouth opened slightly, then closed. Under the weight of the cameras and Julian’s steady look, she managed a stiff, tight nod, her silence serving as the perfect confirmation.
“Excellent,” Julian said quickly, turning back to the reporters. “We expect the final filings to be approved by the clerk’s office by tomorrow morning.”
Thomas quietly sat back down at his desk and pulled the official Vance estate folder from the pending drawer. While the cameras continued to flash in the hallway, Thomas opened the file and turned to the bank clearance page. The authorized signature was Julian’s, but the corresponding estate accounts showed a zero balance that had never been cleared by the court. The public performance was concluding, but the paperwork in Thomas’s hands suggested a massive gap between Julian’s words and the actual ledger.
