Part 4: The Cost of the Photo

For several seconds, nobody on the studio floor moved. The hum of the heavy studio lights overhead was the only sound in the cavernous room. The crew members, who had spent the last hour adjusting the set and monitoring the shoot, stood frozen. Their eyes traveled from the glowing screen of Avery’s phone to the physical contract still lying on my dressing room vanity, and finally to Avery herself. The evidence was laid bare in the middle of the studio. I stepped forward and picked up the phone before Avery could grab it. I turned the screen toward her. ‘You have one choice left, Avery,’ I said, keeping my voice quiet but completely firm. ‘You unlock this phone right now. You delete the photos of my contract from your camera roll, your sent messages, and your cloud backup trash. You do it while Sarah and Marcus watch you press the buttons. If you refuse, or if you hesitate, I am turning this phone, the cloned keycard, and the security footage over to the studio’s legal counsel and the police for commercial espionage.’ Avery’s face flushed a deep, blotchy red. She looked around the circle of onlookers, her eyes searching for any sign of support, but the crew members remained silent, their expressions hardened. The friendly atmosphere of the shoot had vanished. ‘I… it was just a draft,’ Avery stammered, her voice cracking as she reached for the phone. ‘I didn’t send it yet. I swear I didn’t send it.’ ‘Unlock it,’ I said. With trembling thumbs, she entered her passcode. Under the direct supervision of Sarah and Marcus, she opened her photo library. I stood close enough to watch her tap the images-three high-resolution photos of the confidential contract pages. She tapped the trash can icon, then navigated to the ‘Recently Deleted’ folder and cleared them permanently. She opened her message threads, showing the unsent draft to the rival agent, and deleted that too. ‘They’re gone,’ Avery whispered, her head bowing. ‘They’re completely gone. Please, Chloe, don’t do this. We’re family.’ But the room had already turned. The crew members stepped back, physically separating themselves from her, creating a wide, empty space around her in the center of the floor. No one spoke to her. No one offered a word of comfort or tried to diffuse the situation. The silence of the crowd was absolute and heavy, filled with public shock at the depth of the betrayal. There were no apologies made, no attempts to smooth things over; the entire room simply shut her out. Sarah stepped forward, her voice cutting through the silence like ice. ‘Your guest privileges are revoked, Avery. Security has already been notified and is coming to escort you from the premises. Furthermore, I will be personally contacting our brand’s entire agency network to ensure you are blacklisted from any future campaigns.’ Two uniformed security guards walked onto the set, their heavy boots clicking against the concrete floor. They stopped on either side of Avery. She grabbed her designer bag, stuffed the cloned keycard inside, and walked quickly toward the exit without looking back. The heavy metal stage door slammed shut behind her, the sound echoing through the rafters. Sarah turned to me, her expression serious. ‘We need to secure that contract immediately. I’m having Marcus lock it in the main office safe for the remainder of the shoot, and the building manager is already resetting the digital codes for all the dressing rooms on this floor.’ I nodded, the tension finally leaving my shoulders as I looked toward the lights. ‘Thank you. Let’s get back to the shoot.’ The lighting technician, Leo, shook his head and turned back to his console, muttering something under his breath. The makeup artist who had been standing nearby quietly packed up her brushes, refusing to look at Avery. Marcus took the physical contract from the vanity, placed it in a secure folder, and walked it down the hall to the administrative wing to place it in the double-locked safe. The remaining crew members immediately returned to their positions, adjusting the reflectors and positioning the cameras as if the disruption had never occurred.
