Part 4: I Locked the Door on the Debt He Kept Trying to Hand Me
I did not answer Derek in the chat. I did not explain myself again. I stayed on the payment app screen and changed the settings one by one until his name stopped having a direct line into my phone.
First I limited payment requests to contacts only. Then I blocked new requests from Derek entirely. After that I muted the Bennett Family chat so it would stop lighting up my screen every time somebody decided to repeat his version. The changes took less than a minute, but the screen looked different once they were in place. His request button was gone. His name was still there in old activity, but the lane he had been using to make the debt feel official was closed.
Right after I finished, Derek called again. I let it ring out.
Then he texted.
Derek: Are you really doing this over a favor?
I stared at that line and answered only what I could stand behind.
Maya: I am not paying you for something I never agreed to.
He sent back three messages in a row. The first said I was embarrassing the family. The second said I was twisting what happened. The third said I knew he had helped me. I did not reply to any of them. The app did not let his messages push through the blocked request path, and that was the point. He could still type. He could still argue. He could not make the payment screen do the work for him anymore.
Aunt Carla sent a separate text after that, not in the group chat this time.
Aunt Carla: Just settle it so this doesn’t get uglier.
I read it once and sent her the exact same answer I had already given the thread.
Maya: No debt. No payment.
Then I put the phone face down and waited.
The next thing that changed was practical, not dramatic. The pending request expired. The payment app stopped showing his claim as active. His name no longer appeared as someone who could ask me for money through that channel. When I checked again later, the account settings showed the restriction in place. He was locked out of the shortcut he had been using to turn a story into a bill.
The group chat kept going without me. I could see the muted badge count rising when I opened it later, but I did not open every message. I only checked enough to know the pressure had changed shape. Derek was still there, but the mechanism was gone. Grandma Jo had typed one plain line that I could see before I closed the thread again.
Grandma Jo: Stop asking her for money.
Nobody in the chat answered that right away.
Derek tried one last time by direct text, then by call, then by a new request that never reached me because the account path was already locked down. Each attempt hit the same wall. He had built the whole thing on making my refusal look rude in public, but once the app stopped serving him the same way, the debt lost its teeth. There was nothing left for him to point at except the old messages, and those were already saved.
I did not expose him. I did not paste every screenshot into the family thread. I did not need to. The visible consequence was enough: his payment access to me was cut off, his request window was closed, and the pressure he had been leaning on could not keep reaching me. That was the relief I felt when the phone finally stayed still in my hand. Not victory. Just control back in my own account, where it belonged.
