Part 4: Locked Out
‘If you step foot near my apartment or try to touch any of my accounts, I will file a harassment report with the police and hand over this entire financial ledger,’ I said, my voice cold, flat, and absolute. ‘Do not contact me again, Tyler. We are finished.’
I did not wait for him to respond or give him the chance to argue. I clipped the leash tightly to Buster’s collar, turned my back on Tyler, and walked straight through the double gate of the dog park. I kept my gaze fixed ahead, refusing to look back to see if he was following me to my car. My chest was tight and my heart was pounding, but I kept my pace steady until I reached my vehicle, opened the door, and ushered Buster inside.
Once Buster was safely in the backseat, I climbed into the driver’s seat and locked the doors. The heavy click of the door locks echoed in the quiet cabin, bringing the first wave of hard-edged relief. But I knew Tyler’s threats about my accounts and my apartment were real. He still had the old password to my veterinary portal saved on his browser, and he knew the keypad entry code to my front door. I had to act immediately before he could try anything.
I pulled out my phone and went to work. First, I opened the veterinary clinic portal and the microchip registry app. I tapped on the security settings, changed my registered email address to a private account he had no knowledge of, and updated the passwords to a complex, randomized string of characters. I enabled two-factor authentication, ensuring that any login attempt would require a code sent directly to my personal phone number. Tyler was officially locked out of Buster’s medical and registration records. He could no longer attempt to alter the ownership details or request copies of the clinical files to use against me.
Next, I opened my smart home app. I navigated to the door lock settings for my apartment. The guest code I had created for Tyler when we were living together was still active in the system. With a single tap, I deleted the code 8842 from the lock’s memory, erasing his physical access to my home forever. I then changed my master door code to a brand-new sequence that he could never guess.
I started the car and drove home, the tension in my shoulders slowly beginning to release as the distance between us grew. When I arrived at my building, I walked Buster up the stairs, my hand gripping his leash with a sense of quiet ownership. We stood in front of the door. I entered the new keypad code, heard the motorized deadbolt retract with a mechanical whir, and stepped inside.
I closed the door behind me and immediately threw the physical deadbolt, locking the outside world away. Buster trotted over to his water bowl, drinking deeply before flopping down on his favorite rug with a contented sigh. The vindictive ex who had tried to claim my dog using a fabricated debt was gone, shut out by the digital and physical barriers I had built. I sat down on the floor next to Buster, burying my hand in his thick golden fur. The safety was real, the boundary was locked, and Buster was finally safe.
