Part 4: The Mechanical Override

I descended the metal stairs and arrived at Exit Booth Lane 2. The air in the concrete corridor was thick with exhaust fumes and the sound of horns. Arthur Vance was still standing beside the payment stanchion, his posture rigid, his voice maintaining its controlled, authoritative tone as he explained to a frustrated driver behind Clara that the garage was under an automated security lockdown.

I stepped between Arthur and the payment terminal, holding the printed system audit logs in my hand. I did not speak to him immediately. Instead, I handed the first page to Clara through her open window. The document clearly detailed the fourteen-hour sequence of declined transactions, the returned check notice, and the zero-dollar balance on the VIP card. Clara looked at the paper, her eyes scanning the columns of numbers, before looking up at her father. Arthur’s eyes remained fixed on the booth glass, his face completely devoid of expression.

I then turned to the payment terminal. I pointed to the flashing red warning light on the intercom box. ‘The system has locked this lane because of manual code inputs on the maintenance keypad,’ I said, keeping my voice level and dry. ‘The VIP card you inserted has been permanently captured by the terminal vault under our fraud prevention protocol.’

Arthur did not attempt to retrieve the card. He folded his arms, his chin raised slightly as he looked at the printed logs in his daughter’s hand. ‘There is a processing delay,’ he said, his voice flat. ‘The VIP terms dictate that the primary cardholder must approve all vehicle releases when a validation conflict occurs.’

I opened my official logbook, placed it on top of the terminal housing, and wrote the final administrative record. I read the text aloud so that Toby, Clara, and Arthur could hear it clearly: ‘Administrative Incident Report. North Garage Exit Lane 2. Incident time 8:32 PM. Player account Arthur Vance suspended for system tampering and returned checks. VIP card confiscated by automated vault. Online payment receipt for vehicle license plate 4-D-F-7-2-8 verified. Manual override authorized.’

Arthur stood motionless on the concrete curb, his arms crossed, his gaze shifting from the booth to the floor. He did not make any further assertions about casino policy.

I reached for my security belt, unclipped the heavy brass manual override key, and inserted it into the mechanical lock at the base of the gate housing. I turned the key clockwise. The internal gears engaged with a loud, metallic grind. The striped barrier arm slowly lifted, rising until it cleared the roof of Clara’s sedan.

Clara shifted her car into gear. She did not look at her father or speak to him as she pressed the accelerator. The sedan moved forward, its tires chirping briefly on the painted concrete before it swept past the booth and out into the street traffic. I turned the key back to the vertical position and removed it. The heavy wooden gate dropped back down with a sharp, final thud, locking the lane once more and leaving Arthur Vance standing alone under the harsh fluorescent lights of the exit lane.
