Part 2: The Original File
By the next morning, the post in the duplex community group chat had gathered over fifteen comments. Elena watched the screen as she brewed coffee in the kitchen. One neighbor had posted a meme of an overflowing washing machine, while another asked if Unit B needed help finding a cleaning service. The private interior of their home had become the morning’s entertainment for the suburban complex. Marcus had not replied to Maya’s email request, but he had an active presence online, liking the neighbors’ jokes in the group thread.
Elena set a mug down in front of Maya, who was already at her laptop, checking her inbox. “Still nothing?” Elena asked.
Maya shook her head. She opened the group chat again. A new comment from Marcus read: “A tidy home is a safe home. We have standards to maintain here.”
Elena watched Maya’s jaw tighten. Maya did not type a response to the group chat, refusing to engage with the public thread. Instead, she opened a separate tab and accessed the local tenant union resources, studying the state laws regarding landlord entry and unauthorized photography.
At 10:15 AM, the email notification sound chimed.
Elena leaned over Maya’s shoulder. The email from Marcus was brief: “Attached is the photo from the safety walkthrough. Please ensure the hallway remains clear of personal property.”
Attached was a large, uncompressed image file-the original, uncropped version of the photo he had posted to the group chat. Maya clicked the download button. The file opened in full resolution on the screen.
The cropped image in the group chat had only shown the blue plastic laundry basket against the wall. But as the full-sized, uncropped image loaded, the frame expanded significantly. Elena squinted at the screen, pointing to the left side of the image. “Maya, look at the doorframe.”
The wider angle showed the entire entryway of Duplex Unit B. The door was swung fully open into the apartment. But it was the reflective surface of the hallway mirror, hanging just past the threshold, that caught Elena’s attention. In the mirror’s reflection, the image captured a figure holding a smartphone.
The reflection in the mirror showed a distinct view of Marcus’s green jacket and his face, positioned deep inside the apartment hallway-proving he hadn’t just stood at the door, but had walked entirely inside their home to take the shot.
Elena looked at Maya, who was zooming in on the mirror. The resolution was clear enough to distinguish the landlord’s features, his fingers gripping the phone, and the absolute lack of any notice or emergency that would justify his presence there.
“He sent the proof himself,” Elena whispered, pointing to the metadata time stamp at the bottom of the raw file. It matched the exact time they had both been away from the duplex.
Maya closed the image viewer, copied the file path into a secure folder, and began drafting a new document. It was not a reply to the group chat. She opened a template for a formal lease termination, her fingers moving steadily across the keyboard as she pasted the image metadata into the breach-of-agreement clause. Elena watched the cursor blink on the screen. The community chat continued to chime in the background with new notifications, but Maya turned her phone face down, completely ignoring the mounting public noise.
