My Nephew Claimed the Festival Sponsor Page Was Hacked, Until We Ran a Live System Test – Part 4

Part 4: The Credentials Purged

The red numbers on the terminal screen changed with mechanical precision.

150, 149, 148…

Leo backed up until his shoulder blade hit the frame of the door. “Type the coordinator override code, Clara. Now. If you type the bypass, the system stops the lock. You have the master card. Just scan it.”

Clara did not move toward the scanner. She stood with her arms crossed over her chest, watching the countdown. “You didn’t want me to call Marcus,” she said, her voice steady and quiet over the drone of the cooling fans. “You said it would lock the gateway. But you knew this diagnostic would find your laptop.”

“I was trying to show you the vulnerability,” Leo said, his words tripping over each other. He wiped his palms on his jeans. “I created the mock-up to demonstrate how easy it is to deface the server. I wasn’t trying to hack anything. It was a demonstration. If I didn’t make it look real, you wouldn’t have listened to me about upgrading the security. I wanted to help.”

Clara turned her head to look at him. She did not yell. Her face remained expressionless under the fluorescent tube lights. “You told me the bank page was already compromised. You told me we were going to lose the sponsorship. You wanted the master credentials.”

“We will if we don’t stop the lock!” Leo’s voice rose, cracking on the last word. He reached for the brass latch of the door behind him. “If the card readers go down because of this, it’s not my fault. I tried to tell you to let me fix it.”

“The card readers are on a segregated line, Leo,” Clara said. “Sam already told us that.”

The terminal beeped twice, a high-pitched electronic signal that cut through the low hum of the servers.

05, 04, 03…
COUNTERMEASURE ENGAGED.

The flashing red border stopped. The screen cleared, replacing the diagnostic logs with a solid blue administration screen.

Leo’s phone in his hand vibrated with a sharp, double buzz. He pulled it out and stared at the screen. The device display lit up his face with a pale blue glow. He tapped the screen three times, then let his hand drop to his side.

“My login is gone,” he said.

“Your access is removed,” Clara said. She turned away from him and looked at the main clock on the wall. “The sponsor page is displaying the correct community bank logo. The connection is clean.”

“Clara-” Leo started.

“Go sit in the car, Leo,” Clara said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “I have to meet the bank representatives at the front gate in twenty minutes.”

Leo stood in the doorway for three seconds. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out. He turned and walked down the wooden steps of the media booth, his sneakers crunching on the gravel path outside.

Clara picked up her phone from the counter, slipped it back into her pocket, and adjusted her coordinator badge. “Thank you, Sam,” she said, before stepping out of the booth and closing the screen door behind her.

I unlocked the keyboard tray, slid it out, and returned the terminal to the standard monitoring layout, the green connection status lights glowing steadily in the quiet room.
