Part 2: The Paper Trail

Julian stepped closer to Sarah, his physical presence blocking her from the direct line of sight of Dr. Vance and the other board members. “Sarah, put that away,” he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper that still reached Elena’s ears at the registration desk. “We are in public. This is not the place for old printouts.”

Elena observed the slight tremor in Julian’s right hand as he reached toward the envelope. Sarah stepped back, maintaining a clear two feet of distance between them. She pulled a single, multi-page document from the envelope. On the bottom of the visible sheet, a raised gold notary seal caught the light of the lobby chandeliers.

“The clinic’s policy is very clear, Julian,” Sarah said, her voice remaining steady. She did not raise her tone, but the clarity of her words drew the attention of several more patrons who had drifted over from the VIP reception hall. “Every decision regarding the stored materials requires joint consent. You told the board I stepped back, but you know that isn’t true.”

“Because you did,” Julian said, his posture stiffening as he tried to regain his commanding demeanor. He turned to Dr. Vance, offering a quick, defensive chuckle. “Dr. Vance, this is simply a misunderstanding. The paperwork Sarah is holding is from the initial consultation. It has since been superseded by our private agreements.”

Dr. Vance did not look convinced. He adjusted his glasses, his eyes lingering on the gold seal visible on the papers in Sarah’s hand. “Julian, any change in authorization must be processed through the legal department with notarized signatures from both parties. We cannot accept verbal assurances, especially during a public transition.”

“And I have those files,” Julian insisted, his voice rising slightly, losing its smooth cadence. “The digital submission was completed last week. Sarah is presenting outdated physical copies to create confusion.” He turned back to Sarah, his face reddening. “Show them the date on that, Sarah. Show them it’s irrelevant now.”

Sarah held the document close to her chest, her fingers covering the date but leaving the official stamps visible. She looked at Elena, then at Dr. Vance.

“I would like the director to verify the signatures,” Sarah said.

Julian moved to intercept the document as Sarah extended it toward Dr. Vance. “There is no need to trouble the director with internal family matters tonight,” Julian said quickly, his hand moving to block the exchange. “We will resolve this in the morning.”

Dr. Vance reached out, his hand hovering near the paper. “If there is a notarized document present, Julian, the clinic is obligated to review it immediately. Especially if it contradicts the digital file update you submitted.”

Elena watched as Julian’s gaze darted from the document to the faces of the gathered board members. The confident, expansive gestures had disappeared; his arms were now crossed tightly over his chest. What did the document actually state, and whose signature was truly valid?
