Part 4: The Public Correction
The silence in the lobby stretched. Dr. Vance handed the document back to Sarah, who placed it carefully inside the manila envelope.
“Julian,” Dr. Vance said, his voice carrying clearly to the patrons who had gathered near the entrance of the VIP reception hall. “Without that signed revocation form, the digital update you submitted is invalid. Sarah retains equal joint ownership of the remaining embryos. The clinic cannot and will not alter the storage files.”
Julian stepped back, his hands dropping to his sides. “This is an internal disagreement. The board doesn’t need to be involved in this.”
One of the board members, a woman in a dark grey suit who had been listening closely, turned her back to Julian and began speaking in hushed tones to the colleague next to her. The other patrons in the lobby began to murmur, their faces turning away from Julian as they drifted back toward the reception hall. The atmosphere of polite celebration had evaporated. A couple who had been chatting with Julian earlier stepped away, adjusting their coats and heading toward the far corner of the lobby without making eye contact.
“Julian,” Sarah said, stepping forward. “You told the board and everyone in this room that I had no legal standing. You said I agreed to step back. You need to correct that.”
Julian looked at the board members, then at the guests who were now actively avoiding his gaze. A red flush crept up his neck. “Sarah, let’s talk about this privately.”
“No,” Sarah said, her voice clear and firm. “You made the claim publicly. You will correct it here.”
Julian cleared his throat. His chest rose and fell rapidly. He looked at Dr. Vance, who stood with his arms crossed, waiting.
“There was… a misunderstanding,” Julian said, his voice much quieter than before. He looked down at the marble floor, then back at the small circle of patrons who remained. “Sarah has… she has active standing. The files are not being updated. She retains full joint rights to the embryos.”
The woman in the grey suit did not look back. She walked toward the main hall, followed by the rest of the board members. The low murmur of the crowd shifted, turning into a collective, cold silence as they moved away, leaving Julian standing in the center of the lobby.
Elena watched as Dr. Vance tapped the registration desk. “Elena, flag this account immediately. Place an administrative hold on all materials under this name. No digital access, no physical transfers, and no inquiries are to be processed without both parties present at the clinic with government identification. Is that clear?”
“Understood, Dr. Vance,” Elena said, her fingers flying across the keyboard to apply the lock to the database. A red banner appeared across the screen: ACCOUNT RESTRICTED – JOINT CONSENT REQUIRED.
Julian stood alone. He did not look at Sarah. He turned and walked toward the exit, his shoes clicking loudly on the stone floor.
Sarah took the envelope and tucked it under her arm. She nodded once to Elena, then to Dr. Vance, before turning to walk toward the glass doors of the clinic, her posture straight and relaxed.
Elena watched the doors slide shut behind her, the lobby remaining silent in the wake of the departure.
