Part 4: The Administrative Record
Brooke continued to whisk the mixture, her movements mechanical and stiff. The studio was completely quiet except for the rhythmic scraping of the metal whisk against the glass bowl. Chloe stood by the counter, watching the glaze thicken under the bright ring light. She did not speak, nor did she attempt to help.
Mara watched the live viewer count begin to drop rapidly as the comment section turned into a wall of links to the sponsor’s public accountability page. On the screen, Brooke finished the glaze, poured it slowly over the prepared lavender cakes, and set the bowl down. She did not present the dish to the camera. She simply stood behind the counter, her hands resting flat on the marble, her knuckles white under the LED glow.
“Thank you for joining us today,” Brooke said to the camera. Her voice was flat, devoid of its usual rhythmic energy. “We will see you next week.”
Mara reached over and pressed the button on the control panel, terminating the live stream. The red “LIVE” indicator on the camera body flickered and went dark.
Instantly, the warmth of the studio seemed to dissipate, leaving only the hum of the cooling fans inside the LED ring light. No one spoke. Brooke remained behind the counter, her eyes fixed on the marble surface. Chloe turned slowly, walked to the prep rack, and began organizing the remaining measuring cups, placing them back into their designated stainless-steel slots with quiet precision.
From the corner of the studio, a soft chime signaled an incoming notification on the kitchen’s administrative tablet. Mara walked over to the desk and picked up the device. An email had just arrived from the legal department of Pure Life Holdings, the parent company of their primary sponsor.
Mara read the document on the screen. It was a formal administrative notice, stamped with the date and time of the broadcast. The text was brief and direct:
*”Pursuant to Section 4.2 of the Green & Pure Partnership Agreement, signed on the 14th of last month, the use or display of non-certified synthetic additives during public broadcasts constitutes a material breach of the brand purity covenant. Effective immediately, corporate sponsorship is terminated. Access to the Green & Pure digital channels and revenue distribution portals has been suspended. The violating partner, Brooke, is stripped of all editorial authority, and her access credentials to the studio scheduling system have been revoked.”*
Chloe walked to the coat rack, retrieved her canvas bag, and slung it over her shoulder. She did not look at Brooke, nor did she look at the tablet in Mara’s hand. She walked toward the studio exit, her footsteps soft on the linoleum floor. At the door, she paused for a brief moment, her hand on the brass handle, before stepping out into the hallway and closing the door behind her.
Brooke remained standing under the ring light. She did not move to turn it off, nor did she reach for the tablet. She sat down on the high stool behind the counter, staring at the damp smudge her hand had left on the printed contract.
