Part 4: What Stayed Locked

Nina answered from the doorway of the den, not from the desk. She set the headset down on top of the monitor stand, and the cable slid after it in a clean line that made the whole setup look smaller than it had a minute before. “I already did,” she said.

Ethan reached for the mouse again. The screen showed the same account prompt, then switched to a verification lock after one failed attempt, then another. Mara watched the cursor jump and stop. Jaden looked down at the controller in his lap, then at Ethan’s hand hovering over the keyboard. The room did not go silent, exactly. It just stopped giving Ethan the benefit of assuming he still had time.

Nina took one step back into the hall. She did not ask for the keys a second time. She did not explain the whole setup. She only held up her phone long enough for Mara to see one last thing on the screen: the shared account settings had been changed, and the linked login was no longer active on the headset.

That was when the room changed sides in plain view. Jaden said, “So the ride was never the only thing she needed.” He looked at Ethan, then at the hall table where Nina’s keys were already in her pocket. Mara saw Ethan turn toward the door like he might follow, but he stopped when the headset screen flashed again and the account prompt locked one step deeper. The cable still hung from the headset, but now it led to nothing useful.

Nina kept walking.

She went down the hallway toward the front door, and Mara followed just far enough to see Ethan stay in the den with the monitor glowing on his face. Behind her, Jaden said something low and flat about the login screen, and Ethan answered too quickly to sound calm. Then another warning box appeared on the monitor, this one with a clear line saying the account was locked until the primary access method was restored. Mara did not need anyone to translate it. The setup that had been used to force obedience was now stuck behind its own closed door.

Nina reached the entry table, took up the keys she had set there earlier, and dropped the house key ring into her pocket. She pressed her thumb against the backup phone once more. In the den, the monitor went dark except for a final message about the device being removed from the account. Ethan said her name, but she did not turn around.

Mara watched her stop at the threshold, check the phone, and call one short message to the number already listed on the screen. Whatever it was, the only part anyone could hear was the automated voice that followed: the shared payment method had been removed, and the linked account needed a new login owner before the headset could reconnect.

Ethan looked up at that line and then back at Nina with the cable still draped over the desk like a dead line. Jaden stepped out of the couch area and shut the den door most of the way, leaving Ethan inside with the darkening screen and the locked prompt. Nina kept going to the front door, opened it, and let the outside air in without looking back.

The pressure did not explode into an apology. It broke into consequences. Ethan was left with a locked account, a dead session, and hardware he could not keep running without the access he had already cut off. Nina walked out with her keys, her phone, and the first quiet that had belonged to her all day.
