Part 2: The Telemetry Loop
Leo stopped at the edge of the diagnostic counter, placing his palms flat on the clean laminate surface. “Hey,” he said, directing the greeting to Chloe before nodding at Maya. “Didn’t expect to see you at the plaza this afternoon. Is there an issue with the AuraLink unit?”
“We’re just running a basic diagnostic,” Maya said, her voice even. She did not close the window displaying the active spatial wireframe.
Leo looked at the screen, his smile dropping slightly, though his posture remained relaxed. “Ah, the calibration loop. I told you, Chloe, the custom lighting overlay has to map the environment to render the shadows correctly. It’s a complex shader. It looks like it’s doing a lot of work, but it’s just local processing.”
“It’s bypass routing,” Maya said, tapping the diagnostic console keys to bring up the network port analysis. “The glasses are utilizing a master token to ignore the local home network’s privacy block. The dressing room coordinates are specifically flagged as restricted on Chloe’s profile, but the glasses mapped them anyway.”
Leo shook his head, letting out a short, dismissive laugh. “It’s a developer beta. The override is there so I don’t have to re-authenticate every time the device restarts. It’s a standard pipeline. Once the filter is polished, those developer tokens get stripped out.”
Chloe picked up the AuraLink glasses from the counter, turning them over in her hands. “You told me the mapping data stayed on the local headset, Leo. You said nothing left the device.”
“It doesn’t,” Leo said, his eyes shifting from Chloe to Maya’s hands on the keyboard. “It’s temporary cache data. It overwrites itself every twenty-four hours.”
“Then why is there an active TCP connection?” Maya asked. She plugged the Master Token USB-C Key-the plaza’s high-level diagnostic tool-into the side port of the console. The terminal screen flickered, prompting for manager authentication. Maya scanned her plaza credential card, bypassing the developer-level encryption on the glasses’ active stream.
A new panel opened on the display, showing the raw outbound packet logs. A series of destination IP addresses began to populate the screen in real-time, matching the timestamps of Chloe’s movements from earlier that morning. Maya pointed to the destination IP address displayed at the top of the log.
Chloe leaned closer to the screen, her eyes scanning the registry details associated with the IP. The owner information on the network packet header read: Leo_Private_Dev_Server_01.
“You’re streaming it,” Chloe said, her voice dropping to a whisper. She set the glasses back on the counter with a sharp click.
Leo’s hands slid into his pockets. He took a half-step back, his shoulders tensing. “It’s a mirror stream. I need to see how the shader behaves under real-world lighting transitions. I can’t debug it if I don’t see the telemetry.”
Maya watched him, her fingers resting quietly on the console’s keyboard. The diagnostic feed continued to update, showing the packets of spatial data routing directly to the external server.
