Part 2: What the Fridge Paper Said

Tessa kept the livestream rolling, and that made the next few minutes impossible to smooth over. The ring light stayed fixed above the island, throwing clean white circles across the cabinet doors and the care log taped to the fridge. Maya had not moved away from the stove. She lowered the heat, checked the pasta water, and slid a spoon under the sauce again while Tessa kept talking over her. “She’s doing this on purpose,” Tessa told the phone. “I asked for backup, and now I’m the one stuck cleaning everything.” The camera caught the sink, the drying rack, the stove, and Maya’s hands moving from one task to the next.

Nico stepped closer to the fridge when Renee pulled the care log all the way free. It was not a dramatic document, just a page covered in block letters and times, but it changed the shape of the room the second it was visible. Renee ran one finger down the lines and read them out without performance. “Trash out. Grocery bags put away. Baby wipes restocked. Stove checked. Timer reset. Counters wiped.” She paused and looked at Maya. “This is your handwriting?” Maya nodded once. “Yes.” Tessa said, “That’s just a list.” Renee lifted the paper higher. “It’s a list with times on it.” She tapped the top row. “And it starts before you said Maya stopped helping.”

The stream phone buzzed hard in Nico’s hand. He turned it so the screen faced the others for a second, and the comments were no longer about the sink. They were asking who made the list, why the times were in order, and why the person being blamed was still the one handling the food. Tessa reached for the phone, but Nico angled it away and kept reading. “Someone clipped the first minute,” he said. “It shows Maya at the stove before you told her to ‘get out of the way.'”

That was the first time Tessa stopped speaking for a beat. Not long. Just enough for the kitchen timer to chirp once from the counter. Maya turned it off, opened the fridge, and took out the labeled container of broth she had set there earlier. Renee watched her do it. The care log was now flat against the fridge again, but everybody in the room had already seen the part Tessa wanted hidden.

“You clipped my face out,” Tessa said to Nico, and he answered without looking up, “I clipped the whole sequence.” That made her shift her weight and look toward the island, where the ring light was still centered over the prep space like it owned the room. She reached toward the tripod, then stopped when Renee said, “Don’t touch the setup.” It was the kind of sentence that did not need volume to land. Tessa drew her hand back and smoothed the front of her shirt instead.

Maya set the broth beside the pot and said, “Read the last line.” Renee looked down again. The final line was written in the same black ink as the rest: 5:22 – Tessa told viewers Maya was refusing to help. That line had a time stamp that matched the live stream, and it sat under the chores Maya had already completed.

For a second nobody in the kitchen spoke. The chat kept moving. The timer stayed quiet. The ring light kept burning white around the island.

Then Nico frowned at the screen and said, “Wait. If Maya was logged as doing the work before Tessa said she wasn’t helping, who was supposed to be here when the first batch came out of the oven?”
