Part 2: The Access Code

Chloe took two steps toward Maya, holding the tablet close to her chest. The camera operator cleared his throat, adjusting the focus ring on his lens. The silence in the studio grew heavier, punctuated only by the low hum of the air conditioning.

“Maya, sweetie, the canvas needs to be cleared,” Chloe said, her voice carrying a tight, forced cheerfulness. “I need you to pull up the active working file with the vector nodes.”

Maya looked at the screen, then back at Chloe. “The iPad is locked,” Maya said, her voice flat and clear enough to carry across the concrete floor. “It timed out.”

“Then unlock it,” Chloe said. She thrust the device forward. “We don’t want to keep Sarah waiting.”

“I can’t unlock it from here,” Maya replied. “The vector suite is registered under my developer ID. It requires my passcode and the custom library assets I built on my local drive.”

Sarah stepped forward, her champagne glass resting on the edge of the metal table. “Is there an issue with the file? We need to capture the live screen capture for the campaign launch package. It’s a standard verification step for the initial payout.”

“No issue at all,” Chloe said quickly, turning back to Sarah with a wide, bright smile. Her knuckles were white against the tablet’s silicone case. “My assistant just needs to load the correct workspace profile. We use a lot of custom presets.” She turned her face back toward Maya, her smile remaining fixed but her eyes narrowing. “Just type in the passcode, Maya. We need to show them the masking layers.”

I stood by the power pack, watching Maya’s posture. She didn’t reach for the device. Her hands remained at her sides.

“The passcode is private,” Maya said. “And the custom library isn’t synced to your public account.”

Sarah looked between the two of them, her pen tapping against her clipboard. “Chloe, can you not access the project’s vector layers yourself? You signed the contract stating you created these assets from scratch.”

Chloe’s chest rose and fell rapidly. She tapped the screen again, but the red warning text of an incorrect passcode attempt flashed visible even from where I stood. She looked at Maya, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Maya, stop playing around. Enter the code. We discussed this.”

Maya took a slow step backward, away from the workstation and out of the light path. “I built the files, Chloe,” she said quietly. “You don’t have the login because you don’t know how to run the software.”

The photographer lowered his camera. Sarah slowly set her clipboard down on the table, her gaze locking onto Chloe’s face. The brand manager’s eyes scanned the signed contract sitting on the desk, then flicked to the blank, locked tablet screen.

“Chloe,” Sarah said, her voice dropping to a calm, professional tone that chilled the room. “If this is your work, you should be able to open the vector suite and show us the basic node pathing. We don’t need the custom libraries for a simple demonstration of the technique.”

Chloe stood frozen under the key light, the device heavy in her hands, her eyes fixed on the empty screen as the camera operator waited for her to make the first move.
