The text displayed the specific model number of the Aegis-7 unit and the physical contact error code that Vance had bypassed. Directly below it, the system displayed the current eviction filing Vance was drafting for Arthur. The code for Arthur’s violation was identical to the one Vance had overridden: Aegis Safety Code 904.
Vance kept his back to the wall monitor for a moment longer, his fingers tapping the edge of the Aegis Tablet. “The transition protocol requires signature verification by the family representative,” he said, turning slightly toward Claire. “If you refuse to sign, the process proceeds automatically through the administrative portal.”
Claire did not answer. She pointed to the wall monitor.
Vance’s gaze followed her finger. His eyes scanned the screen. The stiff line of his shoulders tightened, the fabric of his collar pulling against his neck. He took a step toward the terminal, his boots squeaking on the polished linoleum. He tapped his tablet twice, but the wall monitor remained locked on the comparison view.
“This is an archival file from a different sector,” Vance said, his voice dropping slightly, though it remained clear in the quiet room. “It has no bearing on the current lease compliance review.”
“The override bypass code is the same,” Claire said. Her voice was level, carrying across the rows of vinyl chairs where the other residents sat.
Arthur looked up from the floor. His gaze moved from Claire to the screen, then to Vance. He did not speak, but his fingers unclasped, resting flat on his knees.
The Aegis-7 unit in the corner rotated its head slightly, the optical sensor clicking as it focused on the terminal display. A low, electronic hum vibrated from its chrome chest.
On the screen, a yellow warning banner appeared across the administrative dashboard: Conflict Detected. Active Administrator Session matches historical bypass signature for referenced safety code.
Vance swiped his finger across the tablet screen, trying to clear the notification. The tablet emitted a sharp, double-beep. The red indicator light at the top of the device turned a solid, frozen yellow. He tried to tap the logout button, but the terminal screen mirrored the failure.
“The system is running an automated audit alignment,” Claire said, referencing the status line on the terminal. She did not raise her voice, keeping her tone flat.
Vance did not look at her. He tapped the tablet screen repeatedly, his movements faster now, his thumb pressing hard against the glass. The screen refused to transition. The yellow banner remained, locking his administrative session. The residents in the Commons watched the screen, their faces catching the pale blue glow of the terminal. No one moved to intervene. The air in the room felt heavy and still, the only sound the quiet clicking of the Aegis-7’s optical lens.
