Part 2: The Silence in the Room

Arthur took a slow step around the display table, his eyes fixed on the blue-and-white box Evelyn held. “Evelyn, you just said ‘deposition.’ A moment ago, you said ‘disposition.’ Which term are you trying to use, and what exactly does it mean in the context of this family registry?”

Evelyn’s lips parted, but no sound came out. Her gaze drifted down to her open handbag. Mark, observing from his position at the side table, saw the corner of a white sheet of paper sticking out from the interior pocket. Three lines of typed text were visible, highlighted in bright blue. Evelyn’s fingers twitched toward the bag, but she pulled them back, her nails digging into the plastic wrap of the DNA kit. The film crinkled loudly in the silent room.

“It is a simple question,” Arthur said, his voice calm but steady. “What are you asking us to do with this sample?”

Evelyn remained silent. She did not look at Arthur, nor did she look at the family tree on the table. She stood entirely still, her eyes fixed on the blank space on the wall behind Arthur’s head.

Brenda stepped into the gap again, crossing her arms and glaring at Arthur. “It doesn’t matter what word she used, Arthur. You are using a minor slip-up to enact a systematic exclusion of a legitimate heir. You are trying to protect your own control over the estate by intimidating her. She doesn’t need to explain legal terminology to prove she belongs to this family.”

Arthur turned his head slightly toward Brenda. “Brenda, you are using the same legal jargon she is. ‘Systematic exclusion’? ‘Legitimate heir’? You’ve never used those words in any of our meetings before. Who gave both of you these terms?”

Brenda did not flinch, but her chin jutjutted out. “We know our rights, Arthur. You aren’t going to freeze her out just because she doesn’t have your archivist training.”

Arthur turned back to Evelyn. He gestured to the Ancestral Heritage DNA Kit in her hands. “Evelyn, if you want this sample entered into our family group, we need to complete the registration. Can you tell us the name of the grandmother who connects you to the Oakridge line?”

Evelyn’s chest rose and fell in quick, shallow movements. She looked down at the box, then at the handbag, but her lips remained pressed together. She did not offer a name, a date, or a single detail about her alleged heritage. She simply stood there, refusing to speak, while Brenda continued to mutter defenses behind her.

Mark raised his camera, capturing the tight, strained line of Evelyn’s mouth and the absolute stillness of her posture. The silence in the room deepened, the other family members shifting uncomfortably in their metal chairs. The script had broken, and Evelyn had no words of her own to replace it.
