Why Uncle Richard Locked the Family Memorial Stream – Part 2

Part 2: The Validation Trap

From the back row, Mara watched Leo’s face tighten as the red warning lights on the main streaming console began to flash in a rapid, rhythmic sequence. The holographic projection of Richard Miller stuttered, his digital suit fragmenting into a grid of grey blocks before stabilizing. The audio speakers emitted a sharp hiss of static. ‘Sarah!’ Richard’s voice was louder now, distorted by the dropping bandwidth. ‘The system is reporting a connection drop. Get back to the console and enter the authorization code. I cannot access the virtual committal space controls from here.’ Sarah did not move from her position. She turned her head slightly to look at the altar, where the VR Memorial Link was now pulsing a warm yellow instead of its stable blue. The screen on her tablet, still resting face-up on the pew, began to display a new system notification: ‘Warning: Local Node Validation Required. Session Will Terminate in Three Minutes.’ Leo checked his logs. The backup system protocols were designed to protect the local physical chapel hardware from remote hijacking. Because Richard had locked the local host’s accounts, the system had automatically flagged the remote administrator’s connection as a potential security breach. Without Sarah’s active, unlocked profile validating the local hardware node, the entire stream was treated as an unauthenticated remote intrusion. Mara observed the reaction of the crowd. Several distant cousins in the second row began checking their own phones, whispering to one another as the virtual chapel feed on the main wall display began to lag, the video frames dropping one by one. The remote attendees in the chat sidebar on the screen were typing questions, their messages scrolling past in a blur. ‘Sarah, this is ridiculous,’ Richard said, his holographic form now shivering with digital noise. ‘Unlock the console. You are ruining your grandmother’s service for everyone. Just sign the document, and I will restore your accounts. You cannot leave without the ride key anyway.’ Sarah kept her hands clasped. She spoke for the first time, her voice low but clear enough to carry in the quiet room. ‘I am not signing anything, Richard.’ ‘Then you will stay right there,’ the hologram snapped back, though his image was now heavily pixelated, his face half-dissolved into green artifacts. ‘I control the gate. I control the stream. You have no authority here.’ At the AV desk, Leo watched the countdown timer hit sixty seconds. A new prompt appeared on his screen: ‘Local validation failed. Initiating remote administrator lockout and session termination.’ The system was preparing to revoke Richard’s access permanently, recognizing his remote connection as the unauthorized party. Leo looked up from his monitor to Sarah, waiting to see if she would step forward to enter the override, but she remained completely motionless by the exit, her gaze fixed on the rapidly deteriorating image of her uncle.
