Part 3: The Override Command

“Let’s see the live test,” Clara said again. Her voice was louder now, steadying as she looked at her father’s arm.

Julian Vance did not move his fingers. He looked at the window, then at the diagnostic tablet in his hands. “A manual override during active calibration risks corrupting the local storage. I don’t recommend it.”

“The facility policy requires it when a resident shows signs of distress,” I said. I pointed to the yellow manual override button on the Companion-V’s shoulder casing. “The button is right there. If the bi-lateral static feedback bleed is stable at four point two, the system will release the clamp within three seconds of the override command. That’s how the manual describes the feedback safety sequence.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at me. His grip on the stylus remained tight. “The manual you are referring to is for the older Companion-IV model. This is the Companion-V. The safety protocols are entirely different.”

“The chassis is the same,” I said. “And the override button is still active. If we press it, the voltage on CH2 should drop, showing the bleed has cleared.”

Clara stepped around the bedside table, positioning herself between Julian and the door. “Run the test, Mr. Vance. If it’s safe, the test will prove it. Otherwise, I want this machine off my father right now.”

Julian looked at the screen of his tablet. He tapped the top corner twice, clearing a menu, then opened a diagnostic terminal. A prompt appeared: *EXECUTE MANUAL CALIBRATION TEST?*

“Very well,” Julian said. His voice had lost its smooth cadence, replaced by a flat, clipped tone. “But if the software lock triggers due to improper interruption, the facility will be liable for the maintenance call-out fee.”

“I’ll sign the digital maintenance log myself,” I said.

Julian tapped the stylus against the screen. The Companion-V emitted a double beep. The blue light on its collar turned off, replaced by a slow, blinking purple indicator.

Arthur shifted in his chair, his head turning slightly to watch the robot’s arm.

“Initiating manual override test,” Julian announced, keeping his eyes on the tablet.

The mechanical joints in the Companion-V’s arm clicked. The chrome clamp did not release. Instead, the hum from the base unit pitched higher, a thin whine that vibrated through the metal frame of Arthur’s wheelchair. On the tablet screen, the line labeled ‘V-REF_CH2_VOLT’ began to fluctuate, the numbers rising from 4.2 to 4.8, then 5.1.

“It’s adjusting,” Julian said, his voice tense. He tapped the tablet bezel with his thumb. “The static feedback bleed is compensating for the sudden pressure shift. This is normal behavior for a high-torque model.”

“The value is rising, Mr. Vance,” I pointed out, leaning closer to see the flashing characters. “If it’s a static bleed, a manual override should drain the current, not increase it.”

Julian tapped the screen rapidly. “The system is redirecting the voltage. It’s a standard safety bypass to protect the logic board.”

The chrome clamp tightened further. Arthur gave a sharp, nasal intake of breath, his free hand gripping the armrest of his wheelchair so hard his knuckles turned yellow. Clara reached for the clamp, but the robot’s arm jerked sideways, moving Arthur’s arm with it in a rigid, sweeping motion that dragged his wrist against the metal edge of the chair’s side panel.

Julian’s fingers flew across the tablet screen, but the interface began to lag, the green lines of code freezing mid-scroll. A red warning banner appeared at the bottom of the screen: *SYS_ERR_09: UNEXPECTED VOLTAGE OVERFLOW*.

“What is that?” Clara demanded, pointing at the red banner. “Why is it squeezing harder?”

Julian did not answer. He pressed the physical power button on the side of the tablet, but the screen remained locked on the red error message. The whine from the robot’s shoulder module grew louder, and the purple light began to flash rapidly, casting sharp, rhythmic shadows against the white wallpaper.
